‘After Dhoni retired, my performance with the ball wasn’t great’: Kuldeep Yadav on missing former India captain’s inputs

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav said he missed former captain MS Dhoni’s inimitable presence behind the stumps in national colours. While the left-arm wrist-spinner was one of India’s leading bowlers in their 4-1 Test series win against England recently, Kuldeep never featured in a Test under Dhoni. However, Kuldeep revelled in white-ball cricket under the guidance of Dhoni from his debut in 2017 up until India’s 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal. Having endured a low patch between 2020 and 2022 before bolting back into the scheme of things across formats, Kuldeep said Dhoni’s tactical nous and wicketkeeping presence bolstered his performance. “I wanted him to play more because it was very easy for us when we were bowling. After Dhoni retired, my performance with the ball wasn’t great,” Kuldeep said in an exclusive interview with The Indian Express. “It happens when a person guides you and that person’s influence is not there anymore, then suddenly everything is on your shoulders. It takes time for you to react to the situation… that probably happened to me. Then slowly you understand and become self-reliant.” Kuldeep had picked up 114 of his 227 limited-overs wickets in the presence of Dhoni. His bowling average jumps over 26 from 22 in the absence of India’s most successful captain and wicketkeeper. Thala Dhoni smashing long sixes

Bhagwant Mann’s friend in AAP’s Punjab LS list, ‘outsider’ party learns insider ways

An hour to go for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announcing names of its Punjab candidates for the coming Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann told noted Punjabi actor, comedian and singer Karamjit Anmol that the party wanted him to contest from the Faridkot reserved seat. Anmol, a close friend of Mann who hails from Gandua village of Sangrur district, admits his first choice was Sangrur. “But the CM told me that an artist should be ready to represent the whole of Punjab. So I agreed to contest from Faridkot,” Anmol told mediapersons. Facing his first electoral contest, Anmol has hit the ground running, holding meetings with AAP workers and all its MLAs representing Assembly segments under the Faridkot Lok Sabha seat on Saturday, and touring the constituency Sunday, including the Tilla Baba Farid shrine. Kotkapura MLA and Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, whose constituency also falls under Faridkot, said, “We are happy the party has chosen Anmol.” However, not many are as pleased, at the AAP’s choices, with the party that came to power representing itself the “outsider” making choices quite like its counterparts in its Lok Sabha list. The choice of Anmol is among the most striking, with Mann’s friend making his political debut straight with a Lok Sabha ticket. The nephew of legendary folk singer Kuldeep Manak, Anmol (52) began life as an entertainer, doing comedy with Mann, before moving on to acting. He has acted in popular Punjabi-language hits like Carry on Jatta 2, Ardaas and Sardar Sahib, and also appeared in the Bollywood film Dev D. Hours before the announcement of his ticket, Anmol had been promoting his new song Mirza on his social media handles. On Friday, he updated these posts by thanking the AAP for making him a part of its ‘Mission Rangla Punjab (Mission Prosperous Punjab)’. The post had his picture in a yellow turban, next to pictures of CM Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal. Anmol, rarely seen in a turban, also posted solo pictures in a dark pink turban. A soft-spoken Anmol is aware of the objections to his candidature by many AAP workers, who are unhappy the party did not choose from among their ranks despite their work on the ground since 2014. “Though I had never thought of joining politics, but people in my village always used to tell me that one day, I would. I want to understand the burning issues of the area and highlight them in Parliament,” Anmol says, adding that he believes in doing positive politics “rather than continuously criticising others”. Anmol also wants to continue his acting career, “as it is my bread and butter”. “I will try to strike a balance,” he adds. “You can call me kalakar (artiste) or leader. Now, I’m both.” Faridkot is known a prestigious seat, having elected Akali Dal titan and former CM Parkash Singh Badal as its first MP in 1977. His son Sukhbir Singh Badal’s political journey also started from this seat, when he became its MP in 1996. However, in 1999, Sukhbir had suffered a shock defeat from the seat, to the Congress. In 2004, Sukhbir had wrested Faridkot back. After the seat was designated reserved in 2009, the Akali Dal’s Paramjit Kaur Gulshan won from here. In 2014, when the AAP made its debut in Punjab, Gulshan lost to an AAP first-timer by over 1.2 lakh votes. In 2019, the Congress’s Mohammed Sadique won Faridkot, with the AAP candidate finishing third. Sadique is also a popular Punjabi folk artist, and remains a top contender for the Congress ticket from Faridkot, apart from Charanjit Singh Channi (Punjab’s first-ever Dalit CM). However, the AAP is confident of winning back Faridkot as, of the nine Assembly segments under the Lok Sabha constituency, only Gidderbaha had not been won by the party in the 2022 Assembly elections. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring had won from Gidderbaha. With no other party declaring their candidates for Faridkot yet, Anmol also believes he has the first mover’s advantage. AAP pick of candidates The first off the blocks in announcing candidates for the Lok Sabha, the party that once attacked other parties for not being loyal to any ideology, seems to have realised the value of keeping a little flexibility. Unlike 2022, when the party fielded many new faces, for example, and swept the polls, with voters rewarding its promise of change, its Lok Sabha list has several known names, including as many as five sitting ministers – Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal (Amritsar); Laljit Singh Bhullar (Khadoor Sahib); Balbir Sidhu (Patiala); Gurmeet Singh Khudian (Bathinda); Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer (Sangrur). The fact that the AAP has had to fall back on its known winners is seen as proof that, quite like other parties, it has not cultivated many leaders – falling back for all practical purposes on the duo of CM Mann and Kejriwal. Of those fielded, only Sidhu and Meet Hayer can be called true blue AAP products, with Dhaliwal, Bhullar and Khudian starting their political careers with the Congress or Akali Dal. Two other candidates who have got tickets, Sushil Kumar Rinku (Jalandhar) and Gurpreet Singh G P (Fatehpur Sahib), also joined the party from the Congress. Apart from Anmol from Faridkot, the reserved seat of Fatehpur Sahib has gone to Congress import Gurpreet Singh, while Hoshiarpur is expected to go to Congress sitting MLA Raj Kumar Chhabewal, who joined the AAP on Friday. Many AAP leaders point to the incongruity of the party, that with much fanfare celebrated B R Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh as its main icons after coming to power, not picking Dalit candidates from own ranks. An AAP MLA argues that the party had to put winnability first. “The party is evolving. Sometimes circumstances also have to be considered. The country is moving towards dictatorship and we need to ensure that we put our best foot forward in every seat. Right now the only method to save democracy is by winning the maximum seats.” Scoffing at the argument, former Akali Dal MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha says the AAP has “always been a fraud”. “It is not the first time that they have done opposite to what they preach. Kejriwal has been the face of the party from the very first day. There is no one after him.”

Illinois primary features competitive congressional races in the Chicago area

CHICAGO (AP) — Voters are set to cast their ballots Tuesday to decide competitive U.S. House races during the Illinois presidential primary. Democratic incumbents in at least two Chicago-area congressional races are locked in energetic challenges in the strongly Democratic territory. Here’s a look at both races: 7TH DISTRICT U.S. Rep. Danny Davis faces one of the toughest reelections of his long political career. The 14-term Chicago Democrat was able to fend off a 2022 primary challenge from progressive, anti-violence activist Kina Collins, who received about 45% of the vote. She is giving it a third try, saying the 82-year-old Davis isn’t the right fit for the district covering downtown Chicago, large swaths of the south and west sides and inner ring suburbs. “We almost won the last election,” Collins said. “We plan on finishing what we started.” It’s a crowded five-candidate primary field, including Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, a former Davis ally who now says it’s time for him to be voted out. Conyears-Ervin, who has backing from the influential Chicago Teachers Union, leads in fundraising and is married to a city alderman, says her perspective as a working mother resonates with voters. “I’m new. I’m fresh. I’m relevant,” she said. “I understand the challenges of working families.” While campaigning, Conyears-Ervin has been dogged by questions from a city ethics probe for allegedly firing top aides who claim she misspent taxpayer money and pressured public employees to help political allies. She has declined to discuss the matter. Davis also has faced ethical questions about misspending congressional funds for the campaign. He has denied wrongdoing. Top campaign issues are crime and jobs, along with questions about Davis being fit for office. He has previously mulled retirement. In December, a campaign staffer used artificial intelligence to alter a photo of Davis to make him look younger, which was temporarily used on the campaign website. Davis has acknowledged it was a misstep. Davis says questions about his age are fair but that his experience is an asset, particularly for getting committee leadership positions. He sits on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. “I’m not running to be the quarterback for the (Chicago) Bears. I’m not running to carry the torch in the Olympics,” he said. “I’m running to use my knowledges, my expertise, my intellect.” He has backing from top Illinois Democrats. Gov. J.B. Pritzker and others held an endorsement event for Davis this month, praising his long record on healthcare, criminal justice and social services. Also running are Chicago educator Nikhil Bhatia and Kouri Marshall, a former deputy director for Pritzker. 4TH DISTRICT U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia is being challenged by Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez, the congressman’s first primary challenger since 2018, when he first won office. Lopez, 45, is one of the most conservative members of the City Council, often backing police. A lifelong Chicagoan, he claims Garcia is out of touch with voters in the area. The Chicago-area district is predominantly Hispanic and includes working class communities and neighborhoods on the city’s southwest side, as well as wealthy suburbs. “He’s just not a fit for this district,” said Lopez, calling Garcia an “extreme” Democrat who hasn’t paid attention to suburbanites. Garcia, 67, says voters have repeatedly put him in office, including in 2022 after a remap added new territory to the district. He also is a former state legislator and city alderman. Garcia, who was born in Mexico and came to the U.S. as a child, is one of the most progressive members of the House. He has wide name recognition, in part from two unsuccessful bids for Chicago mayor. “No one in Chicago who is in elected office today has the type of history that I have for ethical politics and ethical governance as well,” he said. His accomplishments include bringing an estimated $37 million in funding back to the district for dozens of projects, including school programs, a suburban flooding project, a library expansion and funding a clinic for low-income residents, he said. Garcia dominates in fundraising, raising $376,000 in 2023 compared to Lopez’ $46,000 in the same time period, according to federal election records. He also has endorsements from labor groups, while Lopez has picked up support from the Chicago police union. There is no Republican running in the heavily Democratic district, so the winner is expected to win outright in November. Sophia Tareen, The Associated Press

US Fed to provide fresh clues on rate cuts after uptick in inflation

FROM THREE TO TWO? In December’s SEP, policymakers pencilled in three interest rate cuts for 2024, as the Fed moves to ease monetary policy while continuing to push inflation down towards its long-run target. The March update published on Wednesday is unlikely to show a significant shift, although some analysts see a chance that the policymakers could reduce the number of cuts they expect to see this year. Wells Fargo still expects the Fed to pencil in three interest rate cuts for 2024, Pugliese said. This is one less than the bank’s own prediction of four rate cuts this year. However, policymakers are more likely to lower their expectations for rate cuts on Wednesday than they are to raise them, he added. “Looking at the projections, we do think there is a risk that we see two rate cuts instead of three,” EY senior economist Lydia Boussour told AFP. “We’ve got a lot of noise in the inflation data and some upside surprises,” she said. “So there may be some Fed officials that are inclined to adopt a bit more of a hawkish posture.” PATH OF CUTS UNCERTAIN In recent weeks, officials at the US central bank – led by Fed chair Jerome Powell – have urged caution about cutting interest rates too quickly, and have instead said they will follow a “data-dependent” path. “The economic outlook is uncertain, and ongoing progress toward our 2 per cent inflation objective is not assured,” Powell told lawmakers in Washington earlier this month. He later confirmed that he still expects cuts to begin this year. Futures traders currently assign a probability of around 55 per cent that the Fed will start cutting interest rates by Jun 12, according to data from CME Group. This marks a significant shift from the run-up to the Fed’s last rate decision in January, when traders were still widely anticipating the first would come in May. “We were thinking May; we’ve moved that back to June,” Kathy Bostjancic from Nationwide told AFP. “And if it’s not June, I think July.” “I think they’re really going to be inclined to remain in this wait-and-see mode, and wait for more data to really make that move,” said EY’s Boussour, who also expects the Fed’s first rate cut to come in June.

‘A history we write together’: Wales elects its first black leader

Gething, who is currently Welsh economy minister, narrowly beat Education Minister Jeremy Miles in a race to replace First Minister Mark Drakeford. Drakeford, 69, announced late last year he would step down once a replacement was chosen. Gething, 50, won 51.7 per cent of the votes cast by members of the party and affiliated trade unions, and Miles 48.3 per cent. Once he is confirmed on Wednesday by the Welsh parliament, the Senedd, where Labour is the largest party, Gething will become the fifth first minister since Wales’ national legislature was established in 1999. Once Gething is in the post, three of the UK’s four governments will have non-white leaders. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has Indian heritage, while Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf was born to a Pakistani family in Britain.

Ovechkin scores as Washington Capitals edge Vancouver Canucks 2-1

Brock Boeser had the lone goal for the Canucks (42-18-8). Washington goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped 21-of-22 shots and Casey DeSmith made 22 saves for Vancouver. The Canucks remain atop the Western Conference standings, one point ahead of the Dallas Stars. Vancouver pulled DeSmith with two minutes left on the game clock but couldn’t beat Lindgren with the extra attacker. After a listless second period, the home side fought to get back in the game by outshooting the Capitals 11-4 across the third. Ovechkin gave Washington the lead 7:54 into the second with his 19th marker of the season. After a slow start to the campaign, the legendary Russian winger has 11 goals in his last 20 outings. DeSmith came out of his crease, anticipating a shot from the slot. Instead, Connor McMichael found an unmarked Ovechkin stationed at the side of the net and Ovechkin poked it in to put the Capitals up 2-1. Washington had levelled the score a minute and 53 seconds earlier. Moments after the Canucks were called for icing, the puck went off Wilson’s skate in front of the net and was collected by Ivan Miroshnichenko. He used a backhand pass to feed Wilson at the side of the net and the burly forward tapped it in.
