The Reverend Richard Coles’ love life – husband who died and lie he was forced to tell

The Rev Richard Coles came out to his mother Elizabeth with a song. He was 16, it was 1978 and he played her Tom Robinson’s Glad To Be Gay four times on repeat before she asked: “Darling, are you trying to tell me something?” The former Strictly star, 61, took a while to make peace with his sexuality, attempting suicide and being diagnosed with clinical depression. But he went onto find love, beginning a relationship with David Oldham, a fellow Anglican priest, in 2007. Three years later the pair entered into a civil partnership and David took Richard’s surname. At the time, Richard assured the church their relationship was celibate but he recently confessed this was a lie to enable him to keep his job as a vicar. In an interview with The Times, he said: “I felt sometimes like I was in the resistance and they were the Gestapo.” “I’m not the first person to find themselves obliged to lie for institutional reasons in the Church of England,” added the vicar, who worked at St Mary The Virgin Church in Finedon, near Peterborough, from 2011 to 2022. Sadly, David died of alcoholism in 2019 aged just 42 after becoming increasingly ill with liver disease. Richard went onto write his book The Madness of Grief: A Memoir of Love and Loss, a personal account of life after loss. Richard is now dating actor Dickie Cant, joking dipping his toes into the dating game was like “a polar bear coming out of hibernation and looking for a seal”. The former vicar has even suggested the relationship could be headed towards marriage. “I wanted to meet someone who had been around the block and wanted to share a life with someone,” he said of meeting 59-year-old Dickie, who has starred in Mary Queen of Scots and Doctor Who. “I thought I was out of the game when David died.” Watch Richard on Hamza: Escape to the Wilderness on Together TV, tonight at 7pm

Suspected gunman Andre Gordon’s step-mum and sister, 13, among three killed in Falls Township

The victims of the heinous shooting that rocked a community in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, killing three and severely injuring a fourth, have been identified as the police continue to attempt to apprehend him after he barricaded himself inside a home with hostages. The victims were named as his 52-year-old stepmother, his 13-year-old sister, a 25-year-old woman, who was the mother of his children, and the 25-year-old’s mother, who was assaulted, according to Bucks County District Attorney Jen Schorn, who spoke at a press conference on Saturday afternoon. Andre Gordon, 26, entered a home on Viewpoint Lane in Levittown, Pennsylvania, a town just 26 miles northeast of Philadelphia along the New Jersey border, across the river from Trenton, at approximately 8.52am where he shot and killed his 52-year-old step-mum Erin and his 13-year-old sister. READ MORE: Falls Township shootings: Three people dead as suspected gunman barricaded in home with hostages A few minutes later, at 9.01am, he shot and killed the 25-year-old mother of his children after assaulting her mother on Edgewood Lane approximately 2.5 miles south of the first location. In the first home, three family members hid as the horrific events unfolded. In the second, two minors watched as Gordon killed their mother and grandmother. At 9.13am, Gordon made his way to the Dollar General on Bristol Pike in Morrisville, where he stole a gray Honda CRV and drove it to a home on the 100 block of Miller Street in Trenton, a home the homeless man also reportedly has ties to. There, he took several hostages and barricaded himself in just before 12.30pm as the police entered a standoff with him. Local station FOX 29 reported that some of the residents of the home — though it’s unclear if they were among the hostages — were rescued by the authorities, who used ladders to access the second floor of the duplex and grabbed them out of the windows. The company disclosed the inquiry Friday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that cited a letter from the FTC dated Thursday. “Given the novel nature of these technologies and commercial arrangements, we are not surprised that the FTC has expressed interest in this area,” Reddit wrote in the filing. “We do not believe that we have engaged in any unfair or deceptive trade practice.” Like many other social media platforms, Reddit has expressed interest in business deals where AI companies pay to access databases of human-written text that AI models can use to refine their ability to converse, answer questions and produce written work and images on request. Almost a month ago, Reddit announced a $60 million deal with Google for exactly that purpose. That arrangement will also give Reddit access to Google AI models for improving its internal site search and other features. Reddit declined to comment or answer questions beyond a written statement about the deal. Friday’s disclosure comes as Reddit prepares to sell shares to the public for the first time. The San Francisco-based company on Monday filed paperwork that projected a price for its initial public offering valuing the 18-year-old platform at up to $6.4 billion. Evil of drug addiction – The Frontier Post

Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Excise & Taxation, Transport & Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has directed action against the drugs mafia under the zero-tolerance policy and issued strict orders to crack down on the sale of all drugs, including crystal, heroin, ice, hashish, and raw liquor in the province. The Minister emphasized the need to operate under a zero-tolerance policy against all types of drugs and highlighted that officers are required to report on their performance daily. The use of drugs is growing at an alarming level in Pakistan, with 6.7 million users and over 4 million addicts, marking the country as one of the highest numbers for any country in the world. The issue of drug addiction casts a shadow over the societal fabric of Pakistan. The current survey (2022-24) will provide scientific data on the current situation of drug use in Pakistan. It includes a household survey and a high-risk drug use study covering major districts in each province. The broader goal of this nationwide practice is to introduce effective prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programs in the country. Historically, successive governments and society failed to curb drug smuggling and the use of narcotics during the Afghan war, and no proper writ of the law in former Erstwhile FATA played a role in the spread of this evil in our society. Currently, Pakistan’s Ministry of Narcotics Control in collaboration with the US Department of State, the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and the UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) jointly working to curb the excessive use of drugs and access the scope of risk associated with drug abuse in the country, Whilst Pakistan Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) along with other regional LEAs are actively combating drug cartels in AfPak region. Our country also has insufficient rehabilitation facilities for post-addiction treatment of drug users which made the worst situation in the society with thousands of young addicts living a miserable life on the streets and roads in the country. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive approach to education, policy changes, global collaboration, public engagement, and early intervention by the authorities to effectively control drug abuse to promote a healthier life and conducive environment in our society.

Why Jack Riewoldt is following the ‘Pied Piper’ in his vision for Tasmania’s AFL side

As one of the people building Tasmania’s AFL expansion club, which will reveal its colours and identity on Monday, Jack Riewoldt does not have to look far to find a blueprint for building a successful team from scratch. It’s in the former Richmond triple premiership star’s backyard: the NBL’s Tasmania JackJumpers, who have won over locals, schools and the state, quickly establishing themselves as part of Tasmania’s sporting fabric in just three seasons of existence. On Sunday, the “Jackies” will feature in their second NBL grand final series, taking on Melbourne United at John Cain Arena in game one of the best-of-five series. “As an AFL product, we are looking at plenty of things we think we can build our club on from a cultural point of view, and we’d be silly not to look at what’s happening in our own backyard,” Riewoldt, who in September became the first employee of the AFL 19th’s team, told this masthead. Riewoldt is a key figure in creating the new AFL club’s culture and working to unify the state behind it ahead of its launch in 2028.

The Manchester pub that was once at the heart of ‘Little Ireland

It’s a quaint and curious pub, one that you’re drawn to as you step off the train at Manchester’s Oxford Road station. Exiting the concourse the night draws you down a narrow flight of concrete steps – and then there you are – seemingly in a different era of cobbled streets running underneath railway arches. The steps lead down to Wakefield Street, and The Salisbury, hidden in a Victorian world just off Oxford Road and its relentless traffic. Inside, The Salisbury is the embodiment of a warm and welcoming pub Period tiles, wooden furnishings, barrels, comfy booths and walls covered in rock memorabilia. Like Grand Central nearby, The Salisbury is a favourite stop off for any music fan arriving in Manchester by train for a gig at the Manchester Academy, Deaf Institute or the o2 Ritz. But The Salisbury has a much longer history. A plaque on the wall tells you that the pub is located in the middle of what was once ‘Little Ireland’, one of the poorest slums in Manchester. Between 1827 and 1947, the four acre district lay south of the area now occupied by Oxford Road Station, enclosed by the railway line and the loop in the River Medlock. It became known as ‘Little Ireland’ as it was inhabited by poor Irish immigrants drawn to the city as a centre of manufacturing, mining, warehouses, docklands and railway building. Join our WhatsApp Top Stories and, Breaking News group by clicking this link The squalid conditions of ‘Little Ireland’ were detailed in German philosopher Fredrich Engels’ book The Condition Of The Working Class In England. It was written during Engels’ 1842–44 stay in Manchester, a city at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Back then, the pub – which dates back to the 1820s – wasn’t called The Salisbury but the Spinner’s Arms, and later, the Tulloghgorum Vaults. Describing ‘Little Ireland’ as “the most horrible spot”, Engels wrote: “In a rather deep hole, in a curve of the Medlock and surrounded on all four sides by tall factories and high embankments, covered with buildings, stand two groups of about two hundred cottages, built chiefly back to back, in which live about four thousand human beings, most of them Irish. “The cottages are old, dirty, and of the smallest sort, the streets uneven, fallen into ruts and in part without drains or pavement; masses of refuse, offal and sickening filth lie among standing pools in all directions; the atmosphere is poisoned by the effluvia from these, and laden and darkened by the smoke of a dozen tall factory chimneys.” Describing the inhabitants, he recounts “A horde of ragged women and children swarm about here, as filthy as the swine that thrive upon the garbage heaps and in the puddles.” The German philosopher goes on to further describe the terrible living conditions – how around 20 human beings would live in the space of a few rooms with one “usually inaccessible” toilet between hundreds of people. In the 1841 census, ‘Little Ireland’ had a population of only 1,510, concentrated in the small streets and courts off the main thoroughfares. By 1847, many of these streets were vacated and later demolished for the construction of the Manchester and Altrincham railway line and Oxford Road railway station. According to the fascinating book, Central Manchester Pubs, written by researcher and academic at the University of Salford, Dr Deborah Woodman, by 1855 the pub had become The Salisbury. Renamed after the politician and prime minister, Lord Salisbury. In the 20th century, the pub belonged to Wilsons Brewery, before being acquired by Watneys through their takeover in 1960, and is independently managed today. A pub steeped in Manchester’s working-class history, it now stands as a solitary, but welcoming, monument to the city’s lost Irish district. Does this story awaken any memories for you?
