Erik ten Hag still angry over Arsenal’s win against Man Utd

Arsenal beat Man Utd in controversial circumstances (Picture: Getty) Erik ten Hag is still angry over Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in September, brining up the result as his side beat Liverpool 4-3 on Sunday. After United beat their arch rivals in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, the Red Devils manager was asked if the win could be a turning point for his side. In his answer, the Dutchman referenced Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over United on September 3, in which his team lost in controversial circumstances. Alejandro Garnacho thought he had netted an 88th-minute winner at the Emirates but the United star was denied by a close VAR offside call before Arsenal scored twice in added time. ‘It could be [a turning point],’ Ten Hag said after United beat Liverpool 4-3. ‘But we have missed so many opportunities. ‘For instance, at Arsenal, was it the fourth game of the season? We should have had a penalty for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund. ‘Then we scored with Garnacho, disallowed. Then we concede a goal which should have always been disallowed. The Oscars speech that has divided Hollywood

The director of the 2015 Oscar award-winning film Son of Saul, László Nemes, has become the latest Hollywood figure to weigh in on the speech given by The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer at the Academy Awards last week. While accepting the award last week for best international film, Glazer delivered a set of pre-written remarks in which he compared his Holocaust film to the current conflict in Gaza. He was accompanied on stage by producer James Wilson and executive producer Len Blavatnik. “Our film shows where dehumanisation leads, at its worst,” he said. “It shaped all of our past and present. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza — all the victims of this dehumanisation, how do we resist?” The Zone of Interest is based on the 2014 Martin Amis novel of the same title. It stars Christian Friedel as Nazi officer Rudolf Höss, commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, and Sandra Hüller as his wife Hedwig.

Constituency projects: The plundering continues

THE distasteful revelations that the National Assembly padded the 2024 federal budget by N3 trillion and awarded over N500 million contracts to members under the opaque and corruption-ridden constituency projects marks another nadir in the looting of the public treasury. At a time when millions of Nigerians are facing privation instigated by the reforms introduced by the Bola Tinubu administration, it is immoral and indefensible for NASS members, as the people’s representatives, to expropriate a humongous part of the budget for themselves. Tinubu should stop this daylight heist if he is serious about curbing public graft. The Economist says NASS members are the highest paid legislators in the world. The illegal constituency projects are a drainpipe by which trillions had been siphoned by NASS members through contractors and other fronts. The latest perfidy became public knowledge during plenary on Tuesday when a senator, Agom Jarigbe (PDP, Cross River North) alleged that ranking senators got N500 million each in the 2024 budget for constituency projects, while other senators got between N75 million and N200 million. Jarigbe made the claim regarding the allegations made by Bauchi senator and the then Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Abubakar Ningi, that the 2024 budget was padded by N3.7 trillion. With an annual budget of N100 billion, the Zonal Intervention Projects known as constituency projects, were established by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration (1999-2007) with the hope of bringing the government closer to the people, but the initiative has evolved into a cesspool of corruption. BudgIT, a civic-tech non-profit organisation, said the NASS inserted 7,447 constituency projects worth N2.24 trillion in the 2024 budget. The organisation said most of the projects have “no national significance but narrowed to personal interests.” This is diabolical. NASS members are constitutionally empowered to make laws for the country and to act as checks and balances on the executive and judiciary; their responsibilities do not include awarding or executing contracts under the guise of constituency projects. Despite conclusive evidence from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission indicating that the constituency projects are simply an avenue for the plundering public funds, it is shocking and disappointing that successive presidents have continued to turn a blind eye to this criminal looting of the treasury. Indicting his colleagues while exposing the rot in the federal parliament during plenary, Jarigbe said, “If we want to go into those issues, all of us are culpable. Some senators here, so-called senior senators, got N500 million each. I am a ranking senator, I didn’t get. Did I go to the press? Most of you got.” Jarigbe’s disclosure confirmed what Nigerians have known all along:NASS members are simply a bunch of self-seeking individuals commonly infected by the greed virus. According to the ICPC, N529.69 billion was recovered in cash and N1.55 trillion was recovered in assets, totalling a conservative figure of N2.08 trillion, from the 703 of 1,377 preselected projects tracked in 21 states between 2019 and 2022. The agency cited other areas of infractions where lawmakers allegedly awarded contracts to themselves, children, or proxy companies. The economic impact of public corruption in Nigeria is significant and pervasive, affecting various sectors of the economy and hindering overall development. A report by global consultancy, PwC, warns that corruption could gulp 37 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP by 2030. This translated to around $1,000 per person in 2014 and will be $2,000 per person by 2030. The retention of the ZIPs in the budget is a form of corruption. It is used to divert scarce public resources to private pockets through spurious projects awarded to cronies and fronts. It has resulted in essential infrastructure projects being delayed or never completed, leading to a lack of basic services such as roads, schools, and healthcare facilities. It must stop.

Reviving Jammu’s Artistic Landscape

After enduring years of neglect, the iconic Abhinav Theatre is finally shedding its dilapidated facade and undergoing a much-needed facelift to restore its former glory. The relentless issue of roof leakage, which plagued the theatre during rainy seasons, has been decisively addressed, marking a significant milestone in Jammu’s cultural narrative. The transformation underway underscores a renewed commitment to nurturing and celebrating Jammu’s rich artistic heritage. As the roof repairs signify the completion of the initial phase, the subsequent stages promise a comprehensive overhaul, encompassing infrastructure upgrades and aesthetic enhancements. The next phase of the plan is to revitalise the academy by embellishing the campus, enhancing visibility through digital displays, and fostering a vibrant cultural calendar. The forthcoming installation of a large screen at the entrance gate, broadcasting live cultural events, exemplifies a progressive approach towards engaging the community at large. Moreover, the pledge to activate the long-dormant Jammu Writers Club signifies a proactive stance towards harnessing local literary talent. By extending support beyond conventional facilities, the initiative aims to cultivate a nurturing environment for writers, echoing the sentiments of inclusivity and empowerment. The assurance to streamline the response mechanism for RTI queries underscores a commitment to transparency and accountability, essential pillars of good governance. The synergy between Government agencies, civil society, and the media exemplifies the power of concerted action to effect positive change. Looking ahead, the envisioned activation of Kala Kendra and the proposed annual calendar of activities signal a renaissance in Jammu’s cultural landscape. By fostering an ecosystem conducive to artistic expression and innovation, the Academy has the potential to emerge as a beacon of creativity and a catalyst for social cohesion. Certain bottlenecks are still there, and as such, it is incumbent upon all stakeholders to rally behind this transformative vision and collectively usher in a new era of cultural resurgence in Jammu.

Watson, Sammy turn down offers, Pakistan’s search for foreign coach hit hurdles

KARACHI, Mar 17: Pakistan’s search for a foreign coach has hit hurdles with former Australian allrounder Shane Watson and former West Indian captain Darren Sammy dropping out of the race for the next head coach of the national team. While Sammy turned down approaches by the PCB citing he is already contracted with the West Indies board as head coach of the WI white-ball teams, Watson returned home on Saturday night after rejecting the offer from the Pakistan board. A well-informed source aware of the developments said that senior PCB officials had held detailed talks with Watson in Karachi during the PSL matches offering him the head coach position. “Watson had initially shown interest and kept certain financial and other conditions to accept the offer,” the source said. “But after the board more or less accepted Watson’s financial demands the Australian was not happy that details of the proposed package were leaked out in the Pakistan media and social media.” (PTI) The Australian then politely turned down the offer insisting he had prior commitments as a commentator in the IPL and also in the major USA league besides wanting to give more time to his young family in Sydney. The PCB reportedly had agreed to a USD 2 million dollar annual fee for Watson. PCB is now expected to go for an interim arrangement for the national team to supervise the training camp in Kakul from March 25 to April 8 ahead of the home five-match T20 series against New Zealand from April 14 in Lahore and Rawalpindi. “A team of local coaches as an interim arrangement for the camp and NZ series is the only available option for the PCB now and Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will be required to make a call after the PSL final on 18th March,” the source said. Naqvi has made it clear that he is keen on appointing foreign coaches for the national team on a long term basis, covering the World T20 Cup in West Indies and USA and Champions Trophy early next year in Pakistan. The source said that former Pakistan captains, Younis Khan, Muhammad Yousuf, Inzamam ul Haq, Moin Khan were also under consideration for the time being. (PTI)

The other Indian in the heat, Kartik Kumar finished ninth in the race with a timing of 28:01.90, which was also better than Surendra’s earlier national record. Iyer links up with KKR ahead of IPL
