Look up! Solar eclipse to be visible Monday in DC area

Thousands of people in the Washington, D.C., area are expected to step outside Monday for a glimpse of a last-in-a-generation solar eclipse. The total solar eclipse moving across the United States will be the last one visible over the continental U.S. for another 20 years. While D.C., Maryland and Virginia aren’t in the path of totality, it will still be worth putting on your eclipse glasses as the moon blocks out up to 90% of the sun. During the eclipse, the moon will cast its shadow on parts of North America as it comes between Earth and the sun, said Gina DiBraccio, the deputy director of heliophysics at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “If you have the opportunity to view this, whether it’s the total eclipse or a partial eclipse in the D.C. area, you should absolutely do it because it’s just a special kind of lifetime event,” DiBraccio said. As the paths of the sun and moon partially align around D.C., the sky will grow darker, winds may change, and temperatures are expected to slightly drop. Monday is forecasted to be dry with highs in the 60s and 40-50% cloud cover, according to Storm Team4. Crowds gathering to watch the eclipse from the National Mall or NASA Goddard Visitor Center on Monday would partake in a human tradition that predates written history — although records of eclipses stretch back thousands of years. According to a NASA article, petroglyphs found in County Meath, Ireland, may be our earliest records of an eclipse; they date back to 3340 B.C.E. Scribes in Anyang, China, wrote on shells and bones that “the sun has been eaten” around 1200 B.C.E. Much later, the 1918 eclipse helped confirm Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, rocketing the physicist to fame, according to the National Park Service. Read below to learn when the solar eclipse is and where to see it around D.C. What time is the eclipse in D.C., Maryland and Virginia? The solar eclipse is on Monday, April 8. You’ll be able to see it in the D.C. area from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Maximum eclipse is expected about 3:20 p.m., but the exact timing depends on your location. The moon will begin to move in front of the sun about 2 p.m., slowly covering more of the sun until about 3:20 p.m. It will then move off the sun until about 4:30 p.m., according to the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC). What’s the path of the eclipse? Parts of Mexico will see the eclipse first. The path of totality in the U.S. stretches across 13 states from Texas to Maine. Some people are expected to witness the eclipse from special flights. Businesses around the country are planning to offer special deals and creative souvenirs, such as eclipse-themed beer. Is the DC area in the path of totality? No, the D.C. area will not see a total solar eclipse. The moon will cover about 90% of the sun’s width in the D.C. area during the solar eclipse, according to NOVAC. In Greenbelt, Maryland, the moon will block about 86% of the sun’s light, NASA’s Goddard Visitor Center said. It will obscure 87% of the sun at its maximum in College Park, according to the University of Maryland’s Department of Astronomy. In Rosslyn, Virginia, the moon will block about 75% of the sun, the Rosslyn BID said. Visibility of the eclipse depends on the weather; a cloudy day would obscure the view. What to know about eclipse glasses Take it from former president Donald Trump! Be sure to protect your eyes from the sun during the phases of a solar eclipse. For safe viewing, NASA recommends the use of eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. It’s important to note that regular sunglasses are not dark enough to safely filter the bright light. Eclipses can be briefly viewed without protection when the moon completely blocks the sun. However, since D.C. isn’t in the path of totality it is recommended to wear eye protection the entirety of the eclipse. Here’s where to find solar eclipse glasses in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. When is the next solar eclipse after 2024? Total solar eclipses are rarely visible throughout a huge swath of the United States. The next total solar eclipse to sweep across the continental United States is set to occur on August 12, 2045, following a path from northern California to Florida, according to NASA (although Alaska will see one in 2033, and a total eclipse will pop over Montana and North Dakota in 2044, Forbes reports). Why Rangers penalty was given despite Alistair Johnston ball contact as IFAB rules offer 2 point Celtic explainer

Brendan Rodgers and his Celtic stars were left frustrated after Alistair Johnston was punishing for a foul in the penalty box – despite appearing to win the the ball before making contact with Fabio Silva. However, IFAB rules appear to indicated why referee John Beaton and the VAR team opted to award Rangers a crucial penalty. The Scottish Premiership leaders were in control of the showdown and held a 2-0 lead when the Rangers attacker went down in the box following a challenge from the right-back. Whistler Beaton initially dished out a yellow card to the attacker for simulation – but he was sent to the monitor to review the decision on VAR. That allowed James Tavernier to score and give the home side a foothold in the game as the Old Firm rivals battled out a 3-3 thriller. Replays appear to show the Celtic star flicking the ball before Silva takes a tumble in the box to earn the spot-kick. Despite appear to make contact with the ball first, Johnston is not automatically cleared. Law 12 states that a foul is awarded when a player “tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball, making contact with the opponent before touching the ball” – meaning, in most circumstances, that if you get the ball first, you’re in the clear. However, Law 12 also talks about fouls that are due to the player being “careless, reckless, or using excessive force.” Under the ruling, “Careless” indicates that the player has not exercised due caution in making his play. “Reckless” means that the player has made unnatural movements designed to intimidate an opponent or to gain unfair advantage. And under IFAB rules “excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the use of force necessary to make a fair play for the ball and has placed his opponent in considerable danger of bodily harm. It appears that Beaton has punished the Celtic defender for either being careless in his play – having made a last ditch tackle to clear the danger before Silva collapsed. He could have also deemed the contact reckless if he felt the movement of the star to tackle Silva was “unnatural.”

Ex-paratrooper pays tribute to dog who joined him for 17,000-mile charity walk

A former paratrooper who spent six years walking the UK coastline has spoken of his devastation at the death of the dog who joined him on his journey. Chris Lewis, 43, paid tribute to Jet, his faithful companion who he adopted on his walk. Jet, a white lurcher with a brown patch of fur on her left side, ended up joining him for the remainder of his 17,000-mile expedition. Mr Lewis started his epic walk from Llangennith beach on the Gower Peninsula, near his home city of Swansea, South Wales, on August 1 2017, with just £10 in his pocket and a few days of supplies, hoping to raise £100,000 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. When he returned to the spot where it all began in July last year, he had raised five times that amount, with Jet, his partner Kate Barron, now 37, and son Magnus, now 23 months. Writing on his Facebook page, Wilderness Family, Mr Lewis said his heart has never been so broken and asked Jet to wait for him “on the other side”. He said: “There are simply no words I can use to hide how devastated me, Kate and Magnus are at this moment. “Our beautiful Jet, my best friend and my shadow has left us. “She leaves behind a legacy few ever have. She helped fix me, she walked 17,000 miles, she helped me gain a family. She was loved by so many and helped raise over half a million for charity. “Above all I have lost the dearest most loving friend anyone could ask for. My heart is broken and a void shall remain that can never be filled. “Her love and loyalty won the hearts of a nation and beyond. “Jet my friend you are a legend. I am going to miss you so bloody much. “I know if she could, she would say thank you for all your love and support over the years, so I’ll say it for her. Thank you.” His adventure saw Mr Lewis spend the first coronavirus lockdown on an uninhabited Shetland island, Hildasay. His bestselling book, Finding Hildasay, features a foreword by fellow adventurer Ben Fogle, who has supported Mr Lewis during his journey along with other famous faces including astronaut Tim Peake. In the book, Mr Lewis wrote of how he and Jet met in March 2018, less than a year into his journey. While he was on his walk, he was told that a family was looking for someone to adopt a dog and met them at a pub in Irvine, North Ayrshire. He described himself as “nervous about the whole situation” and questioned if it was a bad idea, but the two quickly bonded. Jet was scared during their first meeting, and Mr Lewis stayed awake all night to comfort her, and in the morning she followed him on his journey. He described her as the “best friend I would ever have”. Mr Lewis served with 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment and struggled to cope after entering civilian life. He decided to walk the UK coastline after suffering with anxiety and depression. The father-of-two was facing homelessness when he set off in August 2017, wearing an ill-fitting pair of borrowed boots with limited supplies. Three years into the trek, he met Ms Barron in Scotland and she joined his walk a few months later. The family’s fundraising page is at justgiving.com/fundraising/chriswalks

Mukhtar Ansari death: Akhilesh demands probe by sitting Supreme Court judge

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday met the family of deceased gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari at their Mohammadabad residence in Ghazipur district and demanded a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the former MLA’s death in jail. Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau who had been in incarceration since 2005, died on the night of March 28 night at Banda prison. The post-mortem report conducted by a team of doctors at Banda Medical College cited “heart attack/myocardial infarction” as the cause of the death, while Ansari’s family alleged that he was a victim of an “orchestrated plan”. “The incident (Ansari’s death) was shocking for everyone – for the family, and the common people. And it is even more shocking after Mukhtar Ansari himself said that he was being given poison (in jail). And that’s what came to the fore. I hope the government will bring out the truth and the family will get justice. Since the BJP government has been formed, the trust in institutions has fallen. You and I have seen in UP that people are setting themselves on fire for justice. People have gone to the CM’s residence and office and set themselves on fire. People have died in jails, hospitals, and police stations. The number of custodial deaths in UP is going up. What does the government want and what is this way of functioning of the government? We Samajwadis feel that justice should be done and truth should come out. The justice will only be done if the death is probed by a sitting Supreme Court judge,” Yadav who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, told mediapersons at Mohammadabad after meeting Ansari’s family. Akhilesh met Mukhtar Ansair’s elder Afzal, his son Umar, and nephew Suhaib Ansari “Mannu” and other family members. When asked about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saying that whoever comes in the way of law and order will face “Ram Naam Satya”, Akhilesh said, “This language can’t be of a chief minister. There are institutions, courts, police stations, and tehsils. This language is being used because he wants votes. Because he has done no development. There is unemployment, and inflation and farmers’ income has not increased. With what face will they go to the farmers and youths who have been denied jobs due to paper leaks? Can’t you see it? The BJP government is using these incidents for its benefit. And the government is getting these incidents done to get its benefits. Because they don’t have answers to questions of people like paper leaks. I am listening to their speeches, and what they are saying. They want a gulf in society based on religion and caste.” “Institutions are being finished. We complain to the police and they are not giving justice. The officers are not giving justice. We are not levelling these allegations… Have we not heard the interview of the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir (Satyapal Mallik), who has said that this is the last election of the democracy, and we must save it with our votes?” the former chief minister added. Praising the family of Mukhtar Ansari, the SP chief said: “Mukhtar Ansari’s grandfathers contributed to the country’s freedom movement. Why did things change and under what circumstances? This family is still helping the poor in times of need. Have we not seen how a sea of people came here after his death? Those people showed that they are standing with the family. Has the government and administration not discriminated against? You, me, and others… Will we accept that this was a natural death? Do the common people not feel that the government is hiding something? A leader of the opposition was poisoned and killed in Russia… Can you imagine that the government is being accused of murder? Did the Canadian Prime Minister not level such allegations,” asked Akhilesh Yadav.

Abbott vs Adams migrant feud rages on after invite to sleep at NY migrant shelter: ‘Gimmicks’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott responded to New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ previous comments that the Republican is “morally bankrupt” and using illegal immigrants as “political pawns” for bussing migrants from the border state to the Big Apple. “He needs to step up and do his job as mayor and protect the people in his community as opposed to gimmicks about what’s going on on the border,” Abbott said on “Fox News Sunday.” The Texas governor is fresh off of a visit to New York City last week, where he headlined the New York Republican Party’s annual gala. Ahead of the visit, Adams invited Abbott to stay at a migrant shelter and learn how the city is handling the immigration crisis. “I’m going to offer him a stay in one of the HERRCs so he can see what he has created and understand how we are treating people with the dignity and respect that he should have shown as well,” Adams said at a press conference when asked about Abbott’s trip to the city. HERRCs are relief centers in the city where migrants are housed. ADAMS TOUTS NYC’S ABILITY TO ‘MANAGE’ MIGRANT CRISIS, OFFERS ABBOTT FREE STAY AT SHELTER DURING TRIP “I’m not quite sure why he’s here and what he’s doing while here, but he’s going to see how you can manage the crisis with the coordination of not one child of families sleeping on the streets of the city of New York,” Adams continued. “When we coordinate together, we should not displace problems to local municipalities. That is not what executives do. It is unfortunate that he made the decision to do that.” Roughly 180,000 migrants have arrived in New York City since 2022, after Abbott began bussing migrants in his state to liberal-leaning cities with sanctuary city laws on the books. The move has spurred Adams to previously claim Abbott is “morally bankrupt,” including in May of last year, and he has also said the Republican governor is using “migrants as political pawns.” Abbott reiterated his long-standing argument during his remarks at the Republican gala on Thursday that President Biden is the one to blame for the influx of illegal immigrants coming into the nation, and that Adams should direct his ire at the president. CRISIS IN CALIFORNIA: MIGRANTS OVERWHELMING STATE WITH ‘NO END IN SIGHT,’ LOCAL OFFICIALS WARN “We made clear by contacting [Adams’] office, and said, ‘We’re not sending them to New York. That’s Joe Biden sending them to New York,'” Abbott said at the gala. “But the criticism kept coming, kept coming, kept coming, despite our denial. So after a while I figured, ‘Gosh, If I’m going to get the criticism, I want to get the credit.’ And thus began the bussing of illegal immigrants to the sanctuary city of New York City.” Fox News’ Martha Maccallum weighed in Sunday that “because of comments like that,” Adams has called Abbott “morally bankrupt and that you’re using these individuals as political pawns,” and asked the Republican governor to respond. NEW YORK CITY BEGINS GIVING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS PREPAID DEBIT CARDS AS PART OF $53 MILLION PILOT PROGRAM “The person who is actually using illegal immigrants as political pawns is Joe Biden. Joe Biden has created this open border policy that has allowed illegal immigrants into our country to appeal to and to appease the far-leftist in the Democrat party… while at the same time destroying the country that he’s in charge of. He is the commander in chief in charge of national security for our country. Our country is being invaded in ways that put our country at risk because of the political games that Joe Biden has played,” he said. Abbott said Adams is “aiding and abetting” Biden’s border policies with the city’s sanctuary status, while highlighting a handful of crime incidents in the city in recent weeks. NYC MIGRANT SQUATTERS FOUND WITH DRUGS AND GUNS WERE PREVIOUSLY CAUGHT AT SOUTHERN BORDER AND RELEASED: ICE “He needs to stop talking boldly about illegal immigration and the migrants that Texas is sending there. And he needs to step up and do his own job, because look at the dangers in New York City under his watch. You have a police officer who was killed. You have the train system in New York, which is treacherous for travelers. You got police officers attacked in Times Square by illegal immigrants,” he said, before calling on the mayor to stop promoting political “gimmicks.” TEXAS GOV ABBOTT TRAVELS TO SANCTUARY CITY TO SAY HE WON’T STOP BUSSING IN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS Abbott championed that illegal immigration “has gone down 72%” in Texas due to the state’s “resistance” to the Biden administration’s border policies, while other states sitting across from Mexico have seen illegal immigration continue to tick up. The state is in the middle of a legal battle to allow state police to arrest migrants suspected of entering the U.S. illegally. A federal appeals court heard opening arguments last week regarding whether a lower court correctly blocked the law, known as SB4, from staying in effect. CLICK TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP “We feel pretty good about this SB4, which is a law that authorizes Texas to make arrests. I feel good about us winning for this very simple reason: What Texas is doing is not in conflict with the laws of the United States of America. They are consistent and uphold the laws of the United States of America. There are laws on the books, passed by Congress, that require the president and the country to deny illegal entry, to detain anybody who comes into the country illegally and to build border barriers. While Joe Biden has abandoned that responsibility, Texas has embraced that duty,” he said.

Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen is in concussion protocol, will miss game against Stars

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen remains in concussion protocol and will miss their game Sunday night against the Central Division-leading Dallas Stars. It ends his streak of consecutive games at 161, which was the longest on the team. Rantanen’s absence is a blow for the Avalanche, who trail the Stars by three points with five games remaining. The 27-year-old Finnish forward has 40 goals and 62 assists this season. Rantanen left Friday’s 6-2 loss in Edmonton after taking a hit from Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm along the boards in the second period. Colorado coach Jared Bednar said Rantanen skated on his own Sunday. He’s listed as day to day. “It’s always tough. He’s one of our top players,” Avalanche forward said Jonathan Drouin said. “Hopefully he gets healthy soon, but you can’t really replace a guy like Mikko.” Colorado also will be without forward Miles Wood because of a lower-body injury. He is day to day, Bednar said Sunday after morning skate. The Avalanche added depth up front at the trade deadline by acquiring Casey Mittelstadt, Brandon Duhaime and Yakov Trenin. “When you’re playing top teams, you have to have depth,” Bednar said. “We’ve got good depth on our team. … The key for us is getting healthy and getting everyone in.” ___ AP NHL: https://www.apnews.com/hub/NHL

Father of killed aid worker urges tougher US stance on Israel

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — When America’s top diplomat called to offer condolences over the killing of his son in the Israeli airstrikes that hit a World Central Kitchen convoy delivering aid in Gaza, John Flickinger knew what he wanted to say. The grieving father told Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the killings by Israel in the Hamas-run territory must end, and that the United States needs to use its power and leverage over its closest Mideast ally to make that happen. Flickinger’s 33-year-old son, Jacob Flickinger, a dual U.S. and Canadian citizen, was among the seven humanitarian workers killed in the April 1 drone strikes. “If the United States threatened to suspend aid to Israel, maybe my son would be alive today,” John Flickinger told The Associated Press in describing his 30-minute conversation Saturday with Blinken. Flickinger said Blinken did not pledge any new policy actions but said the Biden administration had sent a strong message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the relationship between the United States and Israel may change if the Israeli Defense Forces do not show more care for the fate of Gaza’s civilians. “I’m hopeful that this is the last straw, that the United States will suspend aid and will take meaningful action to leverage change in the way Israel is conducting this war,” John Flickinger said. Flickinger said Blinken also spoke with his son’s partner, Sandy Leclerc, who is left to care for their 1-year-old son, Jasper. In addition to Jacob Flickinger, three British nationals, an Australian, a Polish national and a Palestinian were killed in the strikes. John Flickinger described his son as “larger than life,” a “loving son, a devoted dad and new father and a very loving companion to his life partner.” Jacob Flickinger was remembered as a lover of the outdoors who ran survival training retreats and was involved in mountaineering, rock climbing and other adventure activities. He spent about 11 years serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, including eight months in Afghanistan. The elder Flickinger said his son knew going to Gaza was risky, but he discussed it with family members and volunteered in hopes of helping Palestinians in Gaza that aide groups say face imminent famine. “He died doing what he loved, which was serving and helping others,” said Flickinger, whose own nonprofit, Breakthrough Miami, exposes underrepresented students to academic opportunities and prepares them for college. World Central Kitchen representatives have said they informed the Israeli military of their movements and the presence of their convoy. Israeli officials have called the drone strikes a mistake, and on Friday the military said it dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others for their roles. The officers mishandled critical information and violated rules of engagement, the military said. But John Flickinger said that in his view the strike “was a deliberate attempt to intimidate aid workers and to stop the flow of humanitarian aid.” World Central Kitchen has since ceased food deliveries in Gaza, Flickinger noted, and he said it looks like Israel is “using food as a weapon.” The Canadian government has been communicating with the family and is offering financial support to move Leclerc and Jasper from Costa Rica, where the family lives, back to Quebec province to be closer to family, Flickinger said. Flickinger said his son’s remains are in Cairo pending the issuance of a death certificate by Palestinian authorities. Once that happens, the family has made arrangements for them to be transported to Quebec.

“Found Him Hiding Inside Locker”: Bangladesh Military On Arrest Of Kuki-Chin National Front Leader

Bangladesh’s security agencies on Sunday arrested a senior commander of a tribal insurgent group believed to have links with an Islamist terrorist organisation, days after the outfit looted state-owned banks and abducted a bank manager in the southeastern hills, officials said. The elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which draws personnel from the army, navy, and air force alongside police, said that they arrested Cheosim Bom, a key organiser and coordinator of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF). “We found him hiding inside a locked locker during the raid at his home on the outskirts of the (Bandarban) town,” RAB’s region commander Lieutenant Colonel HM Sajjad told reporters in Bandarban. He described Cheosim Bom as Bandarban-based KNF’s top coordinator and a close aide to its chief fugitive Nathan Bom, a fine arts graduate from Dhaka University. The development coincides with Bangladesh Army Chief General Shafiuddin Ahmed’s visit to Bandarban where he said a military-led clampdown against the KNF has started to eliminate the outfit. He said some KNF members were arrested and weapons were recovered from them. “After being cornered last June, they (KNF) appeared willing to negotiate. Unfortunately, their commitment to peace was superficial, as evidenced by their continued involvement in criminal acts,” the army chief said. Bandarban’s autonomous hill district council chief Kya Shai Hla last year took the initiative to convince KNF members to return to normal life under a peace negotiation. But the process was derailed as the outfit last week carried out two attacks on three branches of state-run banks, looted weapons from security guards of the banks, and kidnapped a bank manager. According to reports, the manager was released after three days through mediation, but the KNF’s latest act prompted the tribal district council chief to suspend the peace talks. KNF members last year killed three soldiers and wounded a few others in Bandarban during a security clampdown. Security officials have said the KNF emerged as an armed group mostly comprising people from the Christian-majority Bom tribe. They said the outfit earlier allied with a newly formed Islamist militant group called Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, which took refuge in the hills. The officials said KNF offered armed training to the Islamist group members in exchange for money. Bangladesh had seen the end of a nearly two-decade-long hill insurgency in 1997 with the signing of a peace agreement between the government and Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) or JSS, which had been demanding regional autonomy. The Bom tribe had little involvement during the JSS armed campaign.
