Animal shelter will open its doors on Valentine’s Day for puppy cuddles

Both humans and puppies will receive some extra love on Valentine’s Day this year when the Scituate Animal Shelter opens its doors for visitors to get a chance to cuddle a litter of husky puppies. The animal shelter will allow visitors to play with the puppies from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 14. The cost is $20 per person or $60 for families or groups of up to five people. A litter of six husky puppies, which the Scituate Animal Shelter took on from Boston Animal Control Jan. 26, will be the stars of the show that Wednesday, but other dogs may be available for cuddling. Though it’s unknown what happened to the puppies for them to be surrendered, the shelter knew they had the “manpower” to take the youngsters in, the shelter’s marketing coordinator Lisey Good said. Good said the puppies are extremely energetic, and because they’re too young to even be adopted, taking care of them requires extra work. “Puppies are super exciting for people, and we know they’ll find homes right away, but when they’re too young to be adopted, it’s a lot of work,” Good said. “The volunteers that are caring for them are like ‘Oh my God, I love them more than anything, but I’m exhausted.” Because of their needs, the shelter put out a post on its Facebook page asking for help buying supplies like pee pads, paper towels, and food. It is still collecting items, which can be viewed through an Amazon wishlist. The puppies, which will be 10 weeks old by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around, will likely be the appropriate age for adoption “shortly” after the event, according to Good. Part of the event’s purpose is to help socialize the puppies and expose them to a wide variety of people. “We saw it as doing two things at once,” Good said. “The puppies are getting a lot of love and attention from our volunteers, but it’s actually super helpful to give them socialization and have them meet all these different people. And we know people are dying to meet them.” The shelter doesn’t receive puppies often, so the presence of the young huskies is “exciting” for the volunteers and staff, Good said. Despite the excitement surrounding the youngsters, the shelter is also hoping to get some exposure for other animals at the shelter looking for forever homes. “We’ve got some great dogs and cats that have been here for a while, so we’re hoping people will go with an open mind of meeting their next family members,” Good said. As for the puppies, the shelter is hoping that someone with previous experience with the breed will adopt them because of huskies’ specific needs. The youngsters are also going to grow fast, Good said, so they won’t be as small on Valentine’s Day as they appear in pictures in a Facebook post on the shelter’s page. But they’ll still be “adorable, goofy, and cute,” according to Good. “People need a little love [on Valentine’s Day],” Good said. “It’s perfect, and it goes both ways. The puppies are going to love it too.”

Howard Stern defends Trevor Noah’s upbeat Grammys 2024 monologue after Jo Koy was ‘almost f–king killed’

Howard Stern says he “felt so bad” for Grammys 2024 host Trevor Noah for having a squeaky-clean opening monologue after Jo Koy ruffled a few feathers at the Golden Globes. The legendary shock jock and his “Howard Stern Show” co-host Robin Quivers reviewed the South African comedian’s joke-less Grammys opening in which Noah praised the nominees instead of trying any sly jokes per usual at award shows. “He did the opposite of a roast. He was like a cheerleader,” Stern noted. “He didn’t say one negative thing about anybody.” Stern, 70, then played a clip of Noah’s gush sesh where he praised everyone from producer Mark Ronson and his super famous mother-in-law, Meryl Streep, to rappers 21 Savage and Doja Cat. “’21 Savage is so great. You know how great he is? He always pays his taxes on time,’” Howard mocked Noah. “’And you know what else? Doja Cat flosses every single day. That’s why she has such great breath!’” “‘No one is safe, no one is off limits from my admiration tonight,’” Stern again joked. Stern did, however, claim Noah “did what he had to do” to not offend anyone. “I felt so bad for the guy,” Stern explained. “Trevor Noah is a comedian … [and] I think he did what he had to do.” “I mean, look at that guy Jo Koy,” he reflected on the Golden Globes monologue. “He went up there, he tried to make a few jokes and they almost f–king killed the guy.” Koy’s comedic efforts fell flat in January when the A-List audience full of film and TV greats didn’t appreciate his jokes about the “Barbie” movie and Taylor Swift. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” Koy said at the Globes as an unimpressed Swift sipped on her alcoholic beverage. Meanwhile, at the Grammys, Noah defended the “Karma” singer against angry NFL fans who “think she’s controlling the cameras” that often show her at Kansas City Chiefs games. “Let her live. In fact, on behalf of Taylor, I’m going to give her a break. Every time Taylor Swift is mentioned, I’m going to cut to someone who played football. That’s what I will do,” Noah said as the camera panned to former NFL player and actor Terry Crews. Swift seemingly approved of Noah’s joke, joining in on the crowd’s laughter. Stern previously defended Koy against the backlash, claiming hoisting award shows is “f–king hard to do.” “10 days? You’re doomed!” he reacted to Koy having just over a week to prepare for the Globes. “Telling those jokes to a bunch of people who don’t wanna be laughed at is the biggest bummer in the world,” Stern continued. “Hollywood has no sense of humor about itself. Comedians are supposed to be funny. And the only way to be funny is to be cynical. So why would you want to go to an event where you can’t be cynical?”

Islanders battle for badly needed win over Maple Leafs with new mindset

TORONTO — If the Islanders are going to put together a run over the next nine weeks to get into the playoffs, Monday was a pretty good start. Patrick Roy has said it’s playoff hockey from here on out for the Islanders and it certainly looked that way in a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena, with the Isles sealing a sweep in the season series and gaining two vital points on a wild-card rival on the back of Pierre Engvall’s game-winner late in regulation. The Islanders now sit four points back of Toronto and Detroit in the wild-card race and just two points behind the Flyers for third in the Metropolitan Division. The race, in other words, is on. Just as important, the adjustment to Roy’s system looks to be going swimmingly. After a week off, the Islanders returned to put in a clean performance on the road, getting on the cycle frequently and holding the puck for long periods of time against a high-powered Maple Leafs squad. It was how they defended when the Maple Leafs did the same, though, that was especially notable. For much of the season when the ice has been tilted against them, the Islanders have settled to chip-and-change, playing to see another day and giving up the puck. Here, they looked for chances to attack and rarely iced the puck even when the Maple Leafs were putting on shot after shot. That mindset helped them take a 2-1 lead into the final period following an onslaught from Toronto late in the second. So, too, did the excellent play of Ilya Sorokin, who finished the night with 34 saves and a victory that he very much earned. It looked as though Toronto’s moment had come with 5:40 to go in the game when Oliver Wahlstrom was whistled for interference — a script that felt all too familiar with the Islanders hanging onto a one-goal lead. That script indeed started to play out, with John Tavares deflecting Morgan Rielly’s shot from the right point to tie the game. But the Islanders flipped it right back the other way in short order. It was Engvall — in his first game back in Toronto since being traded 11 months ago — who got on Brock Nelson’s rebound with 2:02 left in the game to net his first goal since Dec. 9 and the game-winner. For a player whose season has not gone according to plan, and for a team whose season has not gone according to plan, that goal was very much necessary. And both Engvall and the Islanders will hope it can help get things back on track. A major boost also came in the form of Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock returning to the lineup and playing together on the second pair, marking the first time the Islanders have had a healthy defense corps start a game since Nov. 24 in Ottawa, when Pelech and Sebastian Aho went down early in the night. Combined with two points in the standings, it made for a night where everything seemed to fall into place for a team that has rarely seen that happen this season. Mathew Barzal got the Islanders on the board first at 10:31 of the first when he netted Mike Reilly’s rebound to score on the same ice on which he skated over the weekend in the All-Star Game. That was only fitting. The lead was given away when Mitch Marner scored at four-on-four 50 seconds into the second period, beating Sorokin up high off a faceoff. But the Islanders got it right back at the expiration of the same penalty that Marner’s goal followed, with Kyle MacLean bursting out of the penalty box and sliding a backhand around Ilya Samsonov. That marked MacLean’s first NHL point, one he was able to celebrate with his dad, John, who is still behind the bench as an assistant coach. It came on a night where the Islanders notched their first road win under Roy as they pulled back to .500 (2-2-1) since the coaching change. It was a result that represented the night well. And a result that was very much needed.

DeSantis Blasts Controversial Senate Border Bill: ‘Legalizing Illegal Immigration’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis slammed the U.S. Senate’s controversial border bill shortly after it was unveiled this week. Speaking during a press conference on Monday, DeSantis said that the bill was a “farce” written by people who have “contempt” for U.S. taxpayers. “We have a huge issue in this country on our southern border. You can’t be a country if you don’t maintain control of your own territory,” DeSantis said. “And yet, this has been going on really for many, many years, decades, perhaps, but it’s never been this bad. And they have now unveiled a piece of legislation in Washington and I think people are starting to point out what a farce it is, to basically say that you only shut the border down once 5,000 people a day come illegally, which is about 2 million a year. So that’s basically legalizing illegal immigration. And there’s so many other things that are wrong with it. But I just think, taking a step back, what it shows me is it just shows me the contempt that these people in D.C. have for American taxpayers.” DeSantis continued, “I mean, the amount of money they want to send all around the world, the amount of money that they’re saying that they’re going to use for border, but it’s really going to go to facilitate more of the problem. I just think the whole thing is a farce. The fact of the matter is the president has the authority to secure the country’s border. You don’t need a new piece of legislation to do that. Just do it, and if you did it, I think a lot of people would be pleasantly surprised that you did it. But what this is, this is just another dog and pony show out of Washington. It will not solve a problem. It will just exacerbate the problem even further. And so I don’t think it likely has much of a chance. But you never know with the folks that we’ve got in Washington, D.C., nowadays.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP BREAKING: Ron DeSantis reacts to Senate border deal”You only shut the border down once 5,000 people a day come in illegally?
