Appeals judges to decide quickly if ‘ballot Siberia’ unfairly biases NJ primary races

“Shouldn’t we be paying attention to the one person who actually represents the state’s interests?” Jordan asked Tambussi, referring to the attorney general. The Camden Democrats’ attorney replied that the lower court judge had not given any weight to Platkin’s letter in his decision, so the appellate court should not either. Attorney Brett Pugach argued the case for Kim’s team, fielding questions from the judges about whether political parties have the right to clearly identify their preferred candidates on the ballot. He said the legal challenge to the county line does not preclude the parties from endorsing candidates or even placing a slogan above their names on a ballot with a different design. The case only takes issue with the way candidates for different positions are grouped together, Pugach added. The judicial panel showed detailed knowledge of New Jersey ballot design during their questioning and pushed back when Tambussi argued that the county line made it easier for voters to find the candidates whom party organizations support. “I don’t know who coined the term ‘ballot Siberia,’ but it shows how it’s not so easy,” said Judge Arianna Freeman, an appointee of President Joe Biden. “Ballot Siberia” refers to the far right side of the ballot, where candidates who lack party endorsements are sometimes placed to reduce their chances of victory. Candidates with the party endorsements appear stacked together in a column or row, which this year would be headed by President Joe Biden on Democratic ballots. Other candidates appear in lines on their own, or in smaller slates they’ve cobbled together. Freeman’s reference drew a laugh from the small handful of activists in the courtroom. “It was incredibly vindicating to hear, from the bench, them mention ballot Siberia,” Antoinette Miles of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance said after the proceeding. “It’s a term that we have used in New Jersey just to demonstrate the depravity that happens when you have county political parties that are able to induce government actors, via our clerks, to design an unfair ballot.” The organization is a plaintiff in a separate lawsuit against the county line. “The hearing today really laid bare what advocates and grassroots and many of us in New Jersey have known for years about the county line system and the political parties that are continuing to defend this to their dying breath,” Miles said.

Judge tosses Nassau County’s ban on trans women playing sports: NY AG

A federal judge on Friday tossed out a pre-emptive lawsuit from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who sought to stave off legal action by New York Attorney General Letita James over his decision banning transgender women from playing sports at county-owned facilities, James’ office said. Blakeman in February issued an executive order effectively barring trans women and girls from participating in women’s sports teams at facilities run by the county. He also forced sports leagues to comply or lose access to fields and facilities. In March, James threatened to sue Blakeman if he didn’t rescind his executive order. The county executive responded by filing a suit citing the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to equal protection under the law. He also claimed his ban enforced Title IX, which protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs. Blakeman’s office did not immediately respond to email messages about the judge’s decision. He has previously signaled he would appeal any adverse ruling, even as his executive order drew recrimination from Democrats statewide, including Gov. Kathy Hochul. Blakeman has been at the forefront of culture-war controversies since taking office in January 2022, when he blocked enforcement of the state’s mask mandate. The following year, he criticized the state’s ban on Native American imagery for school mascots and team names, and frequently appeared on Fox News to defend Daniel Penny, the Marine Corps veteran accused of choking a homeless man to death on the New York City subway. At a press conference last month, Blakeman said in response to James’ threat of litigation on the trans ban that a judge would “make a determination and whatever judge may make that determination … we follow the law here in Nassau.” This is a developing story and may be updated.

Randall’s Island Park is holding a spotted lanternfly egg hunt tomorrow as a way to get a head start on killing the invasive bugs before they hatch. It’s unclear if the debut of “Sex and the City” on Netflix has earned the show a new audience of Zoomers, but hordes of fans are definitely showing up unwanted on the stoop of Carrie’s apartment on Perry Street. A new show of graffiti and street art opens tonight at Bronxlandia, an exhibition space at the site of a former train station in Hunts Point. O.J. First Dates star’s ex-boyfriend ‘suffocated their daughter before driving them both into lorry

A First Date star’s former partner could have suffocated their two-year-old daughter before driving into a lorry in a murder-suicide, an inquest heard. Ashley Henry, 35, was driving back to Leicestershire from a weekend break in Skegness with daughter Oria when he pulled out of a carriageway and hit an oncoming HGV, on the A153 between Ruskington and Anwick. Both he and Oria died at the scene on June 18 last year, and an inquest at Grimsby Town Hall was told it was probable that the two-year-old was not alive at the time of the collision. A pathologist identified a number of features to evidence this was the case but said it has not been possible to determine exactly how the toddler died. And now Area Coroner for Greater Lincolnshire Jayne Wilkes has ruled that Oria was unlawfully killed by her dad – who committed suicide. “Was Oria alive at the time of the crash? The doctor said she was probably not and his evidence was compelling. There was no guarantee that both would be killed, possibly one and the other could have been left with significant life changing injuries,” she said, reported The Sun. “It is possible, probable, that Ashley made sure Oria would not survive.” The father had a limited medical history but this did include periods of anxiety and depression and he was not taking the break-up of their relationship well. There was no evidence of any braking of the car prior to the collision and a note recovered from Ashley’s computer, which was located at his home address, set out clearly his purpose and intention to end both his own life, and that of his daughter, on Father’s Day last June. Ashley had separated from Oria’s mum Rachael Leader two weeks before the accident. Rachael appeared on Channel 4 +’s First dates Hotel in 2020. She released a touching tribute to her two-year-old daughter after the tragic incident, reports Lincolnshire Live. She said: “To my darling daughter, Oria. I love you so much. I’m so sorry your precious life was taken from you. You gave me so much light sweetheart, so much love and so much happiness. “I will cherish each and every moment we had together. You had the most beautiful smile and gorgeous curly hair. You touched the hearts of many, Oria, and I’m so incredibly proud to be your mummy. I miss you so much. “Whilst the pain of losing you is indescribable, I will turn it into purpose, for you and for us. You chose me for a reason and will continue to shine your light through me. We will shine together. My darling girl, my baby, God will keep you safe until we meet again in heaven. I love you, Oria.” For emotional support you can call the Samaritans 24-hour helpline on 116 123, email jo@samaritans.org, visit a Samaritans branch in person or go to the Samaritans website.

Olivia Attwood shares eye-watering fee she earned from televising her lavish wedding

Olivia Attwood has opened up about the salary she was paid for starring in the reality show about her wedding day – and fans may be shocked about her truth. The 32-year-old former Love Island contestant tied-the-knot with 30-year-old footballer Bradley Dack in June last year. Their big day is said to have put them back hundreds of thousands of pounds as they spared no expense to ensure they had a perfect day. And while the happy couple swapped vows in front of loved ones, family members and friends – they also welcomed cameras into the lead up and climax of their big day. All the highlights of the wedding preparations were captured in the four-part documentary series Olivia Marries Her Match – which itself followed on from show, Olivia Meets Her Match, which has aired since 2020 and documents her romance with Brad. Despite the show airing on ITVBe – a huge commercial channel – she claims she has not made a penny out of sharing her wedding day with her viewing public. And, indeed, the star has previously admitted she splashed £200,000 on her big day – £30,000 of which was spent on her wedding dress alone. Speaking on the So Wrong It’s Right Podcast, Olivia “I feel like I should have royalties and have something to do with this. I mean? You see it everywhere… I’m like, I should have a percentage of this cut. I don’t even have anything!” She claimed: “It would interest people that I didn’t make a penny off that series, not one! Not one P because I ended up spending so much trying to keep everyone happy.” Olivia has previously confirmed her nuptials cost a whopping £200,000. She told The Sun: “The figure [£200,000] was out there and it’s spot on. It’s hard because I don’t mind talking about that kind of stuff but I always try to be mindful and respectful, you don’t want to sound out of touch, it’s six figure, it makes me feel a bit sick.” She added: “There is nothing I regret, the band was incredible, the food was great, you have a budget in mind but as the weeks get nearer and nearer, you say yes yes yes to everything and before you know it you are over budget, so I think over all it got away from us a little bit.” The couple reportedly bought 29,000 flowers to decorate their wedding day – and Olivia’s £30k dress was created by the designer Galia Lahav. The couple held their wedding at the exclusive Bulgari Hotel in London and the intimate event was attended by 80 guests. Liv was walked down the aisle by her father, Kai, and the pair beamed as they swapped vows in front of cameras. However, there was laughter in the aisles as Olivia stumbled over her words during one section of her vows – when she was asked to promise Bradley she would stay by him “for richer, for poorer.” The reality star then gasped: “How poor?” – before speedily adding: “I’m joking.” Follow Mirror Celebs on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads.

Conor McGregor’s blistering statement in full as he blasts Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul

Conor McGregor slammed Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul by claiming the fight sets a bad example for those looking to take up boxing. Ring icon Tyson is making a return to boxing on July 20 when he faces social media star Paul in one of the biggest and most controversial fights of the year. Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson will be 58 years old on fight night and hasn’t fought in a professional bout for almost two decades. It’s understood both men want the fight to be professionally sanctioned, but Tyson recently admitted it will likely go ahead as an exhibition bout. UFC legend McGregor, who infamously shared the ring with Floyd Mayweather for his lone boxing fight in 2017, explained why he thinks the fight will do more harm than good. “For me, it does set a bad precedent in the industry because what you’ve got now is – and I would say this to the young athletes coming up, men and women; don’t aspire to be one of these YouTube fighters. Aspire for world titles. Aspire for [the Olympics]. That is how you etch your name in history,” McGregor told SiriusXM. “Doing these little smash-and-grab fights, you might get a few likes, but there’s nothing substantial to it. It’s hollow. It can be profitable, but it’s hollow. I’m noticing a trend in young fighters coming up that are not even interested in competing in the amateur scene or rising up to win a national title. You need the gold on the waist. You need to etch your name on the belt.” Tyson hasn’t fought since going eight rounds against fellow legend Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. ‘Iron Mike’ admitted he was out of shape for that fight and was even bed-ridden for a week after an intense training session before stepping foot in the ring. Tyson said he is scared ahead of his boxing return but thinks the nerves will benefit him against Paul. “I have a weird personality – I don’t think it’sweirdthough. Whatever I’m afraid to do, I do it. That’s how it is,” Tyson toldFox News. “I was afraid of the Roy Jones fight. I was 100 pounds overweight, I was however old, 54, 53, and I said ‘Let’s do it.’ Anything I’m afraid of, I confront it. That’s my personality. Right now, I’m scared to death.”

West in 'denial' about Vladimir Putin who is 'now more powerful than Stalin', says ex-defence minister

Former defence minister Tobias Ellwood has said the West is in “denial” about Vladimir Putin, who “is now more powerful than Stalin”. The senior Tory MP said he agreed with his colleague James Heappey that the UK should consider sending troops to Ukraine to give training to the armed forces in their war against Russia. Mr Ellwood said the UK had “done well to support Ukraine” but what’s happening is “very worrying”. Politics Live: PM vows to secure high-paid jobs for veterans “No one doubts that the world’s feeling ever more dangerous, but we dare not contemplate where history is taking us,” he told Sky News. “Our adversaries, including Russia, particularly Russia, are moving their economies, their industries, to a war footing. But the West is largely in denial.” He added Putin is “now the most powerful leader in Europe”, comparing him to former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin. “He’s removed all his opposition voices. He’s pivoted his entire economy away from Europe to China and Iran. “And he’s now more powerful than Stalin and in plain sight. His goal is to emulate his hero, Stalin, not to replicate the old Soviet Union, but the old Russian Empire.” Mr Ellwood was the defence minister between 2017-2019 and before becoming an MP served in the armed forces. His comments come after Mr Heappey, who resigned as armed forces minister last month, told Sky News that Britain needs to be better prepared for war at a time of growing threats, including by reinvigorating a large “strategic reserve” force of thousands of veterans who could be required to serve again in a national crisis. In a wide-ranging interview, the outgoing MP for Wells in Somerset also repeated a call for an immediate increase in defence spending to close gaps in capability – such as being able to defend UK airspace from missiles – and eventually to regrow the size of the military. Read more:Budget’s lack of new defence spending dismays insidersDragonFire: The new British military laser that shoots down drones The government has increasingly come under pressure over the issue, with senior defence figures raising alarm over the shrinking size of the army and for British citizens to be “trained and equipped” to fight in a potential war with Russia. Follow latest: Moscow accuses British special forces of operating in Ukraine Fresh concerns were raised last week after Sky News’s security and defence editor Deborah Haynes revealed the government has no national plan for the defence of the UK or the mobilisation of its people and industry in a war. The government has said it wants defence spending to rise to 2.5% of GDP as “soon as economic conditions allow”. It is at just over 2% at present. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also confirmed his ambition was to boost the defence budget to 2.5% of GDP, if it fits with Labour’s fiscal rules, according to an interview with the i newspaper. He made the announcement during a trip to a shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, to see nuclear submarines being built – the first visit of its kind by a Labour leader in more than 30 years.
