Apple is poised to release iOS 17.5.2, a mystery new iPhone update, according to reports. The iOS 17.5.2 update is certainly unexpected, but not unprecedented—it was clear the iPhone maker would at least release one more upgrade before the launch of iOS 18 this Fall.

So what could be in the 17.5.2 update? Apple is poised to release iOS 17.5.2, a mystery new iPhone update, according to reports.

One thing about iOS 17.5.2 is clear—it won’t be a features upgrade, which means it’s likely to contain security and bug fixes. Apple has already issued the beta for iOS 17.6, which also contains bug fixes, but the update is earmarked to arrive in late July or August.

iOS 17.5.2—An Emergency iPhone Update?

This, to me, indicates that iOS 17.5.2 could be an emergency iPhone update, which is likely to contain at least one important security fix for your iPhone. Apple is constantly fixing security holes in its software and in recent times, these flaws are being used for scary attacks such as those including spyware. This has led to several high-profile security fixes during the year, which usually come as a smaller update rather than the bigger point upgrades.

Apple did create a new type of security update in iOS 16, called a Rapid Security Response. However, after it botched the second one it ever released, the iPhone maker stopped releasing these. It’s possible iOS 17.5.2 will see the return of the Rapid Security Response, but it’s just as likely it will come in the normal fashion, alongside bug fixes.

iOS 17.5.2—A Mixed Bag Of Updates

There will probably be bug fixes included in iOS 17.5.2, as some iPhone users are complaining about bugs in iOS 17.5.1. These include Wi-Fi and Photos issues. But the fact iOS 17.5.2 comes before iOS 17.6 indicates to me there’s probably a security update in there too.

Apple may explain the details of this when it releases iOS 17.5.2, but it’s just as possible it will remain tight-lipped to avoid attackers getting hold of the details. It’s likely iOS 17.5.2 will arrive this month, possibly within the next week. For now, look out for iOS 17.5.2 in your iPhone Settings > General > Software Update or check back here for the details.
