Taiwan quake injured toll rises to 1,050 with 30 missing, 9 dead

The number of injured in the powerful earthquake that struck off the east coast of Taiwan rose to more than 1,050 Thursday while the death toll remained at nine with more than 30 people unaccounted for, local authorities said. Rescue operations were continuing in the worst hit Hualien County and other areas but have been hampered by damage to road infrastructure, they said. Some 100 people are stranded in the eastern county, with some tunnels and bridges on major roads damaged by the quake, according to local media reports. They included some 60 workers at a rock quarry and tourists at Taroko National Park, featuring a gorge in a mountainous area. The island’s meteorological authority said more than 300 aftershocks have occurred since the quake jolted Taiwan on Wednesday. The authority put the magnitude of the quake at 7.2, while the Japan Meteorological Agency said it registered 7.7. The temblor, the biggest to hit the island since one rocked central Taiwan in 1999, triggered landslides in Hualien County and tilted some buildings in the city of Hualien. One person died in one of the buildings, according to the authorities. Related coverage
