Report: Cleveland ranks one of the top cities for apartment conversion

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland is among the top cities in the country for apartment conversion, according to a new report. RentCafé, an apartment and house rental search website, found that Cleveland ranked 10th among cities for converted apartments from other previous uses in 2023 at 282. Since the 1970s, these sorts of projects, whether from hotels, office buildings and warehouses, have been on the rise in the city with data showing 5,000 units created over the last 50 years. The places with the most apartment conversions in 2023 were Manhattan with 733. This was followed by Richmond, Virginia (662), Alameda, California (372), Charlotte, North Carolina (351) and Cincinnati (342), the only other Ohio city in the top 10. Strictly for conversions from offices to apartments, Cleveland ranked fifth with 202. Tthe top office to apartment conversion total was for Peachtree Corners, Georgia, which saw the creation of 295 apartments in 2023. The only list that Cleveland did not show up on was the most hotels converted into apartments. Rent Café data found that these accounted for more than one-third of adaptive reuse projects, outpacing the creation of apartments from office buildings for the first time since 2012.
