Preakness Odds 2024: Updated Lines and Favorites After Post Positions Draw

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan will not be favored to win the second leg of the Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes. That honor belongs to Muth, the Bob Baffert-trained horse who will line up to the left of Mystik Dan at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday. Muth and Mystik Dan were drawn alongside each other on Monday. A total of nine horses are entered in the Preakness field. Muth opened as an 8-5 favorite. Mystik Dan is not too far behind as the second favorite at 5-2. Preakness Stakes Post Positions and Odds Mystik Dan is the first Kentucky Derby winner since 2012 to not open as the Preakness favorite. That trend might actually play into Mystik Dan’s favor since I’ll Have Another won the 2012 Preakness despite not being the morning line favorite. It is not a huge surprise, though, to see Mystik Dan listed beneath Muth on the Preakness odds board. Muth finished either first or second in all six of his starts, took second behind Derby favorite Fierceness at the Breeders Cup Juvenile in November and won his last two races. Muth did not participate in the Kentucky Derby because of Baffert’s suspension at the track. Mystik Dan finished third in Muth’s last victory at the Arkansas Derby in March. Prior to the Derby, Mystik Dan was not viewed as a Triple Crown threat. Fierceness, Sierra Leone and Catching Freedom were in that discussion. Catching Freedom is the only one of the pre-Derby favorites to compete in the Preakness. Catching Freedom starts directly to the left of Muth. You could spend the entire race watching the inside of the track since Catching Freedom, Muth and Mystik Dan start from third to fifth posts. Imagination, the other Baffert-trained horse in the field, also has six first-or-second-place finishes in his career. He could spoil the race for one of the other three favorites from the furthest outside post in the race. A long shot horse could capture the Preakness, just like Mystik Dan did at the Derby, but there is a good chance one of the four horses with odds of 6-1 or shorter cross the finish line first on Saturday.
