‘People told me lesbians go home with women because they’re not pretty enough to find men’

This year, Meri Hernandez (27) discovered that it’s never too late to be who you truly are. Two years ago, she finally found the courage to come out as a lesbian on TikTok, speak up about the traumatic events her family faced in Spain, and really embrace her life in Ireland. As one of the people featured on RTÉ’s First Dates, she wants this to be the year she finally finds ‘the one’. For Hernandez, ‘the one’ is a Jennifer Lawrence type. “My type has always been blonde girls with blue eyes and big smiles. I moved to Monaghan from Barcelona when I was just 15. Everyone in Spain had brown eyes and dark hair like mine, so whenever we’d see blonde girls, it would seem otherworldly and I think that’s still not worn off. So on First Dates, when they asked me what my type was, I was very clear about what I found attractive,” she laughs.
