Hidden gem Scottish cocktail bar named ‘one of the best’ in the world

A Scottish cocktail bar has been named as “one of the best bars in the world” by a leading food and drink publication. If there is one thing Scotland is known for, it is its whisky and its renowned distilleries and bars all over the country. However, there are also plenty of exciting cocktail venues dotted around for those after something a bit more fun — and not just in Scotland’s cities. On Tuesday, American culinary magazine Food & Wine wrote of how a “170-year-old restored Victorian coaching inn became the home to one of the best bars in the world”. The publication singled out the “world-class” Elsa’s Bar in the Fife Arms hotel in Braemar. Elsa’s Bar is one of many food and drink venues situated in the acclaimed Highlands hotel, and is described on its website as an “exquisite jewel box of a bar”. Featuring an Art Deco design, it is named after Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli — famous for her Surrealist and eccentric fashions. Like the Fife Arms itself, the bar is a stunning blend of old and new. Historic décor contrasts beautifully with more modern touches such as suede seating and even a disco ball. Among Elsa’s Bar’s signature cocktails is the Shocking Pink, which includes Fife Arms gin, cherry, sage, hibiscus, and ginger wine. The drink is inspired by the colour of the same name that was created by Schiaparelli. Instagram Elsewhere, other cocktails on offer include the Tear Up and the Bolero. The former takes inspiration from an iconic gown worn by Schiaparelli and features toasted cashew pisco and Johnnie Walker Black Label, while the latter is based upon the designer’s Bolero jacket — and includes Don Julio blanco and mezcal. Food & Wine stated: “This bar isn’t just a good option for the area but one that stands out among some of the best bars around the world. The space is intimate, the drinks are unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else, and the hospitality is next-level.” Last month, the Fife Arms was also crowned amongst the “most stylish” hotels in the world by GQ. The legendary lifestyle and fashion magazine singled out the hotel for its off-kilter aesthetic and stylish contemporary flourishes.
