The nighttime interactive event has been held in several other countries and Warner Bros. chose the Briars Wildlife Sanctuary as its preferred venue for the Australian version of the event last year following a nationwide search. Event organisers chose the sanctuary because they wanted a site that created the same forest-like atmosphere seen in the movies, a report to councillors said. Councillors held a confidential vote to approve the Warner Bros. proposal in August, voting in private because of the commercial-in-confidence aspect of the proposal, the report said. The event was ultimately kept secret from the public until December. More than 22,000 people have since signed an online petition calling for the event’s relocation. Several environment groups have condemned the site choice and readers on leading Harry Potter fan site Muggle Net have been urged to pressure the event organisers to change locations.
