Florida bus crash: Eight dead and dozens injured after vehicle carrying farm workers overturns

A devastating bus crash in Florida has left several dead and dozens critically injured, with the vehicle carrying migrant workers en route to a watermelon farm. Florida’s Highway Patrol confirmed that around 53 people were on board the bus, which was heading to the farm early this morning at about 6.30am. They reported eight fatalities, with several others rushed to hospital in critical condition, and warned that the death toll could rise. In addition to those critically injured, another 37 people with non-life-threatening injuries were also taken to hospital for treatment. A Marion County Public Schools bus was used to transport the injured, with authorities stressing that no students were involved in the accident, contrary to earlier reports. The impact forced the bus off the road, where it crashed into a fence and two trees before overturning onto a nearby patch of grass. FHP Lt Pat Riordan said there was a “high probability” of more fatalities. He also revealed Florida Highway Patrol is conducting “a massive traffic homicide investigation.” Authorities have also noted a damaged grey pickup truck that was reportedly involved in the crash, but no further details have been provided. The Florida Department of Transportation shut down a section of West Highway 40 between S. W 180th Ave and S.W 140th Ave, between Dunnellon and Ocala following the crash. Highway Patrol troopers advised drivers wishing to travel eastbound through the area to detour via US 41 northbound to West County Road 328, then take West County Road 328 eastbound back to State Road 40. Those travelling westbound on State Road 40 should take West County Road 328 westbound to US 41, before rejoining State Road 40. An aerial view of the scene is shocking. A large white bus can be seen lying on the grass next to the highway, twisted and mangled. Debris is scattered everywhere and the entire front of the vehicle has been ripped off. The whole bus appears crushed, with the most severe damage visible at the front and left side. Highway Patrol authorities at the scene revealed that the migrant labourers were employees of a private firm, with the owner being one of the 53 passengers on board. The company’s name remains unknown as there was no logo displayed on the bus, according to rescue officials who responded to the incident. The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment, but the severity of their injuries has not been disclosed. The Florida Highway Patrol’s Specialised Investigations Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the incident.
