Following the seventh year of Wotif’s Town of the Year awards, Exmouth was crowned the ninth-best town across the country, seemingly prompted by its closeness to the state’s iconic Ningaloo Reef and ancient wilderness landscapes. However, the top spot went to Bendigo in Victoria — sparking an unusual trend in Aussies gravitating inland as opposed to the typical coastal town favourites. Victoria’s historic town known, for its gold rush legacy beat, out the competition in several criteria including affordability, quality and traveller satisfaction. Wotif’s travel expert Sarah King told News.com.au that inland educational experiences are becoming more of a trend. “Aussie travellers are driven by a curiosity to experience the world around them and it’s fantastic to see that pursuit of discovery leading many to find culture close to home,” she said. With the Easter holidays coming up, these results can be used to help plan. “One in five Aussies are planning a trip during the upcoming Easter long weekend and over half plan on taking advantage of school holidays for local getaways, these awards provide the ultimate inspiration for those planning their travels for the year ahead,” King said. Top towns 1. Bendigo, Victoria 2. Broken Hill, NSW 3. Stanthorpe, Queensland 4. Katherine, Northern Territory 5. Bathurst, NSW 6. Tanunda, South Australia 7. Griffith, NSW 8. Stanley, Tasmania 9. Exmouth, WA 10. Coober Pedy, South Australia Wotif also found that 51% of Aussies plan on travelling domestically this year, which is a 9 per cent increase year on year. With a rising cost of living, 27% are choosing domestic travel over international to reduce costs. This information comes after the top romantic cities in Australia were revealed. ♥♥♥Surprising regional WA town hits top Aussie romance list Kalgoorlie managed to slide into the top 10, coming in at number 8.
