2024 AFL live updates: Hawthorn Hawks v Geelong Cats

Easter Monday, like Anzac Day and the Dreamtime Game, conjures up an immediate and distinct image. It was formed originally by Kennett’s Curse, called down when Hawthorn shocked Geelong in the 2008 grand final. For the next five years, the Cats simply refused to lose to the Hawks, picking up a couple of premierships along the way. When the Hawks at last exorcised the curse in the 2013 preliminary final, they began a run of three premierships of their own. That’s ancient history now, but what has endured is a heightened sense of occasion when these teams meet on this day, and as often as not, a stirring football match. Geelong looks intent on putting last year’s rare dip out of the finals behind them. The Hawks, having not won a final since 2015, are going the longer, slower route. Form says the Cats will prevail today, but intangibles will come into it more than in other fixtures. The skies are low over the MCG, but there has been no more than a spattering of rain. If it stays away, and when the lights come up, another classic can be expected. To judge from queues at the turnstiles, the fans have not been deterred.
