Recognition for Borders organisation aiding African village

And this month that support was recognised by Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP Christine Grahame, whose motion in the Scottish Parliament was supported by 16 MSPs. Ms Grahame’s motion said: “That the parliament recognises the charitable efforts of the Parish of Innerleithen, Traquair and Walkerburn through its Thondwe Community Partnership; notes that this partnership has existed for 15 years, with the parish being twinned with the Church of Central African Presbyterian in Thondwe, Malawi. “To foster a relationship between the congregations and provide funds for a range of projects in Malawi, including, it understands, cyclone damage repairs such as food to those impacted and the rebuilding of a bridge that 1,000 children use to get to school, installation of lighting in homes, livestock, washable kit for menstrual needs and school supplies. “Understands that links now also exist between local primary schools and health centres in the respective areas; believes that this partnership represents a good example of local charitable initiatives than can make a real difference, and congratulates all involved on their efforts.” The motion gained cross-party support including the following MSPs: Jeremy Balfour, Colin Beattie, Miles Briggs, Stephanie Callaghan, Jackie Dunbar, Annabelle Ewing, Emma Harper, Bill Kidd, Fulton MacGregor, Stuart McMillan, Audrey Nicoll, Alexander Stewart (Registered interest), Kevin Stewart, Paul Sweeney, David Torrance and Evelyn Tweed. Parish minister, Reverend Fraser Edwards said: “We were delighted to get this recognition in the Scottish Parliament for our special partnership with the community of Thondwe. “Both communities have benefitted from learning from each other during more than 15 years of hard work. “We’re really grateful to the local community for the support that has been given which has improved health, education and wellbeing in Malawi. “ However more than that it has helped our two communities to become good friends as we find common ground in our faith and our hopes for the future.” Murray Charters from Innerleithen added: “This link is so important. “Our community raises funds and takes action to help the folks in Thondwe. “I can only commend this work and urge anyone at all interested to get in touch to find out more.” A spokesperson for the charity said: “Interested in being involved? “We would be delighted to hear from anyone in our community interested in our link, particularly education in a Malawi village school and economic development.”

Recovering the “gateway” from Palma to the Tramuntana Mountains

A joint initiative by Palma, Calvia and Puigpunyent town halls has recovered an historic way that is described as the “gateway” to the Tramuntana Mountains from Palma. This is a track of just over ten kilometres that starts in La Vileta (Palma), passes through Calvia and ends in Puigpunyent, where it connects with the GR 221 Dry Stone Route. The recovery of this path, for which there is historical evidence, has been possible because of the cooperation of landowners. There is signage designed to ensure “correct” use by hikers. Lluís Rubí, the Council of Mallorca’s director for the environment, explains that the path is documented in archives and that the connection in Puigpunyent means that there is an uninterrupted route from Palma all the way to Pollensa. Palma’s director-general for the environment, Sebastià Pujol, says that the way offers “a great opportunity for hiking and outdoor activities”.

Christos Christou: We will have to come to power at some point

The third place in the European elections is not an end in itself, says ELAM president Christos Christou, without excluding this possibility. He is focusing on the election of a MEP and participation in the ECR group – the European Reformists and Conservatives. Soon, ELAM plans to organize a conference in the presence of representatives of the parties participating in the European Reformists and Conservatives group. In an interview with Phileleftheros, he states what these parties stand for, noting that ELAM belongs to this group, and comments on their rise and the characterization of them as a far-right threat to Europe. He sets out the political course of his party, giving a political stamp to its action and distinguishing its position from episodes of violence. He states for the first time how ELAM’s goal is to come to power at some point through political action.

Hibs offer tantalising flashes of potential greatness – despite recurring flaws

It’s a start. A glimpse of what might be, should everything click. And a reminder that certain flaws have the stubborn stickability of a particularly ornery mule. What did we really see in yesterday’s 2-1 home win at Easter Road? A promise of things to come for a Hibs team bouncing back from rock bottom? Or another false dawn in a season, a year, an era of disappearing hopes? Nick Montgomery’s men showed character and ability in solving the problems presented to them by Dundee. That they were forced to fight and scrape for three points is a concern, given their overall dominance. But coming out on top in the arm wrestle will be as much of a confidence booster as the victory itself – their first league win since December 9. Let’s take a deeper look at the key elements of that triumph … Having persisted with a straight-up 4-4-2 through good times and bad, Monty has shown himself to be more adaptable of late. Having toyed with a 4-3-3/4-5-1, he went for the ever-popular 4-2-3-1 against Dundee. You can see why so many coaches like it. Martin Boyle and Myziane Maolida were holy terrors to the Dark Blues fullbacks, Dylan Vente got his first goal since December 3 – and Emiliano Marcondes found himself in areas where he could hurt the opposition. Whether or not Hibs stick with this shape may depend on the opponents. But it’s worth remembering. Leave the goal out of it. No, actually, don’t. Because it’s important to assess the Frenchman’s performance as a whole – and his wonderful solo effort, the coup de grace if you like, deserves to be lauded and applauded for a while yet. Beyond bagging the winner, though, Maolida – a millionaire wunderkind at 18 and a Bundesliga 2 reject at 25 – really caught the eye with his close control. When he gets the ball at his feet, there’s not much a defender can do except hope to avoid suffering a twisted vertebrae in an attempt to pin the attacker down. “He’s a top-class player and you saw that today,” said Montgomery, speaking after the game. “He’s getting better with the more minutes he gets into his legs. “Myziane and a couple of the other guys, like Marcondes, who came in during the window came because they weren’t getting regular football. That’s one thing I spoke to Myziane about when he came in, giving him that opportunity. He’s been getting better week in, week out and against every team he’s a real threat. “You saw his quality in so many moments, and he’s a real team player as well. He more than deserved that goal.” No prizes for guessing the one thing that really annoyed Montgomery on Saturday, the straight-talking Yorkshireman visibly wincing as he pointed out: “Dundee had one shot on target and scored a goal from that, a long throw-in and second phase, so we’re disappointed to concede that. “It was a good defensive display, but they had one shot on target and scored one goal, so that’s disappointing. But the boys were solid, and David Marshall didn’t have much to do. But we do have accept that we conceded a goal from one shot on target. We have to keep working hard.” Even when they clear the first ball from a corner, or free-kick or a throw-in, the danger is never over. Not for this Hibs team, Not yet. Montgomery arrived during the September international break. He inherited players who had been signed by his predecessor’s predecessor’s predecessor’s predecessor, in some instances. Yeah, that’s right. With half a dozen new faces added to the squad, it will still take time for everything to come together. And that’s assuming a high strake rate when it comes to getting something out of recruits who, in some cases, are motivated by the chance to prove themselves. “In the transfer window, we worked really hard to bring in some quality players,” said the former Central Coast boss. “To get some of the injured boys back, to bring in new talent in the window, give them time to integrate with the squad and get used to the league, it took some time. “But today you saw some really top performances from players who have only been here a couple of weeks. And I think that galvanised everybody. This is another step forward to building on this end to the season.” There is clear water between Hearts and Hibs at the moment, when it comes to league position and points on the board. It’s not even a contest. Unlike Wednesday night’s Scottish Premiership clash at Tynecastle. It’s going to be fascinating, seeing how Steven Naismith’s men react to being battered at Ibrox. The fact that Hibs have just begun to build the tiniest modicum of momentum makes it doubly interesting. As if this game needed any added angles, sub-plots or storylines, right?

Philippine protesters say ‘never again’ on anniversary of anti-Marcos uprising

Hundreds of Filipino protesters marched through Manila on Sunday, marking the anniversary of the 1986 uprising that ousted Ferdinand Marcos, while vowing to prevent his son from repeating the dictatorship. Marcos Jnr won the presidency in a landslide in 2022, nearly four decades after a “People Power” uprising ended his late father’s 20-year rule and chased the clan into exile in the United States. While Marcos Jnr remains popular, his campaign to alter the 1987 constitution has proved divisive. Critics warn the effort could lead to the abolition of term limits, with presidents currently allowed just one six-year stint in office. “The theme of this protest is to reject Marcos’s charter change moves which is a move to remain (in) power … which is basically what happened 38 years ago,” said economist Rosario Guzman, 58. She also said she had taken part in the 1986 uprising. “No to Cha-Cha (charter change),” read a protest banner displayed behind a mock black coffin marked “Freedom and Democracy”. Marcos maintains he is primarily seeking to amend the charter’s economic provisions to allow more foreign investment, and ideally create more jobs. He has said the political aspects, including term limits, should be tackled later. According to police in Manila, a few hundred people joined Sunday’s march, a far cry from the crowd that paralysed the capital’s main avenue over four days in February 1986 until the military withdrew its support for the elder Marcos. Rights groups say Marcos Snr’s regime jailed, tortured or killed tens of thousands of critics, including religious leaders, journalists and student activists, while corruption left the country impoverished. At the 38th anniversary march, 21-year-old demonstrator Giu de Sagun said he felt like he was “watching history repeat itself”. Some protesters wore shirts and hats vowing “never again”. At a small, official anniversary event in Manila, a group of government workers raised Philippine flags after laying a wreath in front of the People Power Monument. No senior government officials attended. Marcos Jnr and his family returned to the Philippines after his father’s death in 1989, and began a remarkable political comeback. His presidential victory was fuelled by a massive online misinformation campaign that portrayed his father’s time in office as a golden era. He has since won praise for pivoting away from his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal drug war, which left thousands dead. Under the younger Marcos’ government, rights campaigner and vocal Duterte critic Leila De Lima was also freed after nearly seven years behind bars. “Under (Marcos Jnr), we are given the opportunity to make use of a democratic space in transition from the authoritarian regime that was Duterte’s,” she said last week. “This is our breathing room from the seven years of nightmare that we thought was all over in 1986,” she added.

Donald Trump’s VP Picked by Republicans

A poll has revealed the candidates Republicans would want to see as Donald Trump’s vice president, should he win the presidential election. The former president, who is the GOP frontrunner and likely next president, according to latest polls, has not publicly announced who he would choose as his running mate in the presidential election but has hinted at his shortlist in various interviews. But a straw poll of Conservative Political Action Conference attendees conducted for right-wing news network Real America’s Voice has revealed two Republicans are neck and neck in the eyes of conservatives. Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, a Trump loyalist, and Vivek Ramaswamy, who also previously ran in the GOP primaries and has now endorsed Trump, both secured 15 percent of votes. The poll was conducted by McLaughlin & Associates. Newsweek was unable to source the sample size and methodology in the poll and has contacted the polling firm to comment on this story. After Noem and Ramaswamy, Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who ran for president in 2020 and has since become a regular on conservative media, got 9 percent of the vote share while New York Representative Elise Stefanik, who has been rumored to be on Trump’s list, and Tim Scott, the South Carolina senator who dropped out of the race for the White House in November and endorsed Trump, both got 8 percent of the vote. The poll comes after a Fox News town hall event in South Carolina on Tuesday, when Trump was asked by host Laura Ingraham about six possible candidates: Ron DeSantis, Ramaswamy, Byron Donalds, Kristi Noem, Scott and Gabbard.”Are they all on your shortlist?” Ingraham asked.Trump responded: “They are… honestly all of those people are good. They’re all good, they’re all solid.”According to a Morning Consult poll of 6,321 registered voters conducted from February 17 to 19, the Republican is at 45 percent and Democratic President Joe Biden stands at 41 percent.Presidential candidates typically their choice of running mates in the days and weeks leading up to the party conventions. But speaking to Newsweek last week, Christopher Devine, an associate professor of political science at the University of Dayton, Ohio, and author of the book Do Running Mates Matter?: The Influence of Vice Presidential Candidates in Presidential Elections, has suggested we are in “veepstakes season” with regards to predicting who Trump may want to be included on his 2024 ticket, with CPAC a perfect time for potential candidates to promote themselves for the position.”It is early in that process and I do not expect that Donald Trump will make his decision until the summer,” he said.”But that won’t stop VP aspirants from auditioning for the role. And CPAC gives them the stage to do it.”

Customs rice: APC mourns member, others who died in stampede

The All Progressives Congress has confirmed the death of one of its members, Comfort Adebanjo, and six others who attempted to purchase seized rice put on sale by the Nigeria Customs Service to cushion the effect of the economic hardship in the country. The ruling party made the confirmation on Saturday in an obituary message released to mourn the late party member and the other Nigerians. The PUNCH reports that customs says it has concluded plans to commence the direct distribution of seized food items to Nigerians due to the demonstration against the soaring cost of living in the country. The National Public Relations Officer of the service, Abdullahi Maiwada disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. Maiwada said that the move was in response to the critical challenges of food security and the soaring cost of essential food items in the country. He added that the items must be certified fit for consumption before they could be distributed to Nigerians. However, there was a stampede on Friday, which led to the death of seven persons. The Coordinator of FKL Ward E1, Lagos State of the APC, Oluwafemi Fadahunsi, and Secretary, Comrade Adebari Adewale, confirmed that Adebanjo was one of the seven persons who died during the stampede. In the obituary released on Saturday, the party wrote, “It is with heavy hearts and regret we announce the painful death of one of our members in FKL WARD E1, Mrs Adebanjo Comfort Funmilayo of house number 104, Ibidun street by AKINHANMI street, Ojuelegba. “She was among the 7 victims who died in the course of buying custom rice at Yaba. “May God grant all the members of her family and all the residents of WARD E1 the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.”
