DROPPING LAWYERS SPED UP DISTRIBUTION OF FATHER’S ESTATE – HLOBI

She said ever since the family adopted the approach as advised by the master to deal with the estate on their own, there had never been any opposition. “Where we see that we have been short-changed, we leave it as it is and move on to other things,” said the executor. She also mentioned that tenants such as Shoprite and OK Furnitures decided not to deposit rentals with the executor but in a trust account over the years. She further said some beneficiaries were affected by the long period that the estate has not been wound up.

The View and Idlewild to headline new Pitlochry music festival

Dundee rockers The View and Scottish indie icons Idlewild are to headline a new music festival in Pitlochry. Heartland Festival will be held at Pitlochry Recreation Ground on June 29 and 30. Cammy Barnes – Fife’s “singing barber” who appeared on last year’s Britain’s Got Talent – and Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt are also part of the line-up. The two-day festival will feature the likes of Scottish Celtic rock band Skerryvore, Glasgow singer Lizzie Reid and indie-folk band Tide Lines. Up-and-coming acts join line-up for Heartland Festival in Pitlochry Heartland is being held for the first time this year with organisers hoping it will become an annual event. Graham Howie, one of the festival’s directors, told The Courier: “I live in Pitlochry and I used to present a breakfast show on Heartland FM. “This was always something I wanted to do – launching a destination festival and helping the community. “We want this to be held every year at the end of June. “The festival will be over two days and we will have two stages. “The Discovery Stage is for up-and-coming artists trying to break through. “You never know, the next Paolo Nutini could be up on that stage. “There aren’t many opportunities for up-and-coming artists to get up on a big stage like that.” Graham says any profit made will go back into a community trust. There will also be collection buckets during the festival. He added: “A lot of the performers have been supportive because they like the concept. “There are not many festivals around of this scale – they have also been supportive of the idea of helping the community. “Hopefully this will put Pitlochry on the map as a future festival destination.” Tickets on sale for Heartland Festival in Pitlochry The two stages will have different start times so there will always be an artist performing during the festival. Camping is not available but a car park has been arranged near the venue for those travelling. The festival will also be family-friendly – with activities such as a Ferris wheel for children as well as food and drink stalls. A limited number of discounted tickets for the festival are on sale via itison and tickets can also be bought via the Heartland Festival website.

Lionel Messi: fans refunded in Hong Kong after anger over Tokyo appearance

The organiser of Inter Miami’s ill-fated match in Hong Kong, in which star player Lionel Messi failed to appear, said it would offer refunds of 50%, after the Hong Kong government as well as football fans harshly criticised the event. The refunds will cost Tatler Asia, a magazine and lifestyle brand, $56m HKD (£5.7m). Messi’s failure to play in the much-hyped friendly match on Sunday, because of a groin injury, sparked outrage in Hong Kong, with fans booing the 36-year-old player for not coming on to the pitch. The controversy intensified when he took part in a match in Tokyo on Wednesday. Messi said in a Weibo post on Wednesday that the incident was “regrettable” and that he hoped to return to Hong Kong. “Friends who know me will know that I want to give my best in every game,” he wrote. The anger soon spread beyond the pitch and into mainland China with state media and Hong Kong legislators suggesting that the debacle was a politically motivated snub. Regina Ip, the convenor of Hong Kong’s executive council, wrote on X: “Hong Kong people hate Messi, Inter-Miami, and the black hand behind them, for the deliberate and calculated snub to Hong Kong.” She said that he should “never be allowed to return to Hong Kong”. After Messi played in Tokyo on Wednesday, an editorial in the Chinese state media tabloid the Global Times said that the injury explanation was “unconvincing” and that “the impact of this incident has gone far beyond the realm of sports.” Tatler Asia said in a statement: “We apologise to all those who were disappointed by the football match between the Hong Kong Team and Inter Miami CF … but we are also heartbroken. We put our blood and sweat into bringing a world-class football match to Hong Kong and we were let down along with all of you.” The team, which is co-owned by David Beckham, is due to return to China in March. Activists had criticised Inter Miami for participating in the match in the first place, because of concerns about the deteriorating human rights situation in Hong Kong. Benedict Rogers, the chief executive of Hong Kong Watch, said: “The watching world should not view ticket refunds from Tatler Asia as a win, but keep their eyes and pressure on David Beckham for allowing Inter Miami FC to play in Hong Kong in the first place”. Tatler Asia’s decision came after the consumer council reportedly received 1,178 complaints linked to the match. Tang Ka-piu, a legislator, had threatened legal action against the lifestyle brand if it failed to compensate ticket-holders. Tickets for the match had cost up to $4,880 HKD (£494). The refunds means that Tatler Asia will lose $43m HKD on the event, rather than taking in the expected profit of $13m HKD. The brand has withdrawn an application to the government for a $16m HKD grant to fund the match. The application had been approved but the money not yet paid out. Inter Miami have been approached for comment.

Elliot Page to appear at first UK screening of his new trans film Close to You

Elliot Page’s new film Close to You is set to have its European and UK premiere at BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival next month. Close to You marks Page’s return to the big screen for the first time since 2017, when he appeared in Flatliners. After he publicly came out as trans in 2020, the actor took a step back from the limelight as he embarked on his gender transition journey. The new film, co-written by Page and director Dominic Savage, sees him play trans man, Sam, who visits his home town for the first time since transitioning and reunites with a childhood friend. It is largely unscripted and heavily improvised. In an interview with People, star of The Umbrella Academy Page described Close to You as a highlight of his career. “[Savage’s] process, the experience of making a film in this way is not something I’ve done before. I feel grateful to be a part of his work and hope to do it again,” he said. Page will be appearing on stage at the BFI Southbank on 15 March to talk about his career and the film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. The special BFI Flare screening will take place the day before, with Page and co-star Hillary Baack, as well as Savage, due to appear. “I am thrilled that UK audiences will be introduced to Close to You at BFI Flare,” Page said. “The experience of collaborating with Dominic, Hillary, and the whole team was magical, and I am honoured to be a part of this film,” Page said. BFI Flare Festivals event manager, Darren Jones, said: “It is exciting for us to introduce audiences to this incredible film [and] we’re honoured to have Elliot Page, one of the most dynamic performers in contemporary cinema, to discuss his career and the creative process behind Close to You.” And Savage said: “I’m so excited that Close to You is having its European premiere at BFI Flare. It has been a real privilege to create this unique film about love, identity and family with Elliot Page and the incredible cast of actors. “I’m looking forward to UK audiences feeling and appreciating the important themes and emotions that the film expresses.” The 2024 BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival takes place from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 26 March. The full programme line-up for BFI Flare will be revealed on 13 February at 11am GMT, with general sale tickets available from 22 February.

TEACHER BEATS GRADE V PUPIL, FACES DISMISSAL

Shabangu stated that the incident was unfortunate and that the teacher did it in his own accord, without the knowledge of his office. This, he said, was an anomaly, and that they were hoping for a lasting solution. Asked whether it was the first incident involving the teacher, he said the complaint was not the first one, as another pupil also reported a similar incident. Shabangu said some of the teachers were struggling to embrace positive discipline, which was being encouraged by the ministry.

Doug Ford ready to spend a ‘couple of billion’ dollars on Mississauga LRT extension

The late-stage expansion of the Hurontario LRT could add a “couple of billion” dollars to the project’s final price tag, according to Ontario Premier Doug Ford who spilled the financial details to a business and political crowd in Mississauga. In late January, Queen’s Park directed provincial transit agency Metrolinx to urgently prepare a business case that would lay out how to add two extensions to the Hazel McCallion LRT, already under construction in Mississauga. The changes were to take the line north into Brampton and to revive a loop around downtown Mississauga axed during the Ford government’s first term. “Ontario has received the initial business case,” Premier Ford told the Mississauga Board of Trade on Thursday. “I can confirm we’ll be moving forward with this important project.” While Infrastructure Ontario agreed to an initial $4.6-billion contract with a construction consortium to build and run the 19-kilometre line in 2019, the cost of extending it has not been released by the government. The Ministry of Transportation declined a request to release the business case for the two extensions drawn up by Metrolinx. “Our plan will connect the people of Mississauga, Brampton and surrounding communities so that people can spend less time commuting and more time at home, doing what matters most,” a spokesperson for the ministry told Global News. Speaking in Mississauga on Thursday, however, Ford let slip that the additional stations could be in the billions. “I’m going to spend a couple of billion dollars more to make sure that we do the loop,” Ford told the board of trade audience during a fireside chat. It’s unclear whether the “couple of billion” would cover just the 3-stop downtown loop or the entire expansion Part of the initial plan for the light rail route through the heart of Mississauga was a three-stop loop around Square One Mall, through the city’s downtown. In 2019, Metrolinx announced it would cut the loop from the project due to “budget pressures,” reducing the route from 22 to 19 stops. Roughly three years after it was cut, at a press conference in early 2022, Ford suggested he was willing to reverse the cost-cutting measure. He said the loop would be re-added “eventually” in an off-the-cuff remark. “My finance minister and president of treasury are probably shooting me through the screen for saying that right now, but that’s our goal to make sure that we finish the loop,” Ford said. The Ford government’s January request for Metrolinx to re-start work on the loop they previously cut from the project marked the formal start of that work. The City of Mississauga welcomed the news the project would be moving forward in a statement on Thursday, saying it would support the growth of homes and jobs in the downtown. CAO Shari Lichterman said the city was “very pleased” the loop was set to return to the project. Construction of the route in Mississauga, including around the downtown area, is already well underway. The line was due to be finished in 2024, though the government’s project page no longer lists a completion date. The initial designs for the LRT under the former Ontario Liberal government proposed the new line would run from Port Credit in the south into downtown Brampton, connecting the local GO Train station. In 2015, however, local Brampton councillors rejected the proposal, telling Queen’s Park they weren’t in favour of the line through downtown, leaving it to terminate at Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue. Years of controversy on council over alternative possible routes followed, with the city under Mayor Patrick Brown favouring a tunnelled light rail extension through its historic downtown. Until January, there were few concrete indications the province would listen to Brampton’s new request. On Thursday, the province confirmed the extension would bring the light rail route into downtown Brampton along Main Street. The extension will run four kilometres north of its originally planned terminus at Steeles Avenue and Hurontario Street. The extension is now set to terminate around the downtown Brampton GO station — recently renamed Brampton Innovation District GO. The area it would serve includes Brampton’s historic downtown, city hall and an Algoma University campus. The addition of the Mississauga loop and the downtown Brampton extension came at the same time as another major infrastructure announcement for the area. At the Mississauga Region Board of Trade, Ford announced the government would pursue a dedicated rail line on a route from downtown Toronto to Milton. The new infrastructure would allow for two-way, all-passenger service on the route, which is currently owned and operated by freight rail. As part of the move, the Ford government penned a letter to its federal counterparts asking Ottawa to pick up half the cost of the new railway construction. “We need a cost-sharing partnership with the Government of Canada to build a fully separated passenger rail line … estimated at over $6 billion,” Ford told the business crowd. The announcement raised suspicions from Ford’s political opponents who suggested the transit announcement is linked to the Milton by-election. “Absolutely no question this is related to the fact that they have a by-election coming up,” said NDP Leader Marit Stiles. “They’re concerned and they should be because people in this province are unhappy with this government.” Questions about whether the government policies are linked to the Progressive Conservative’s political fortunes went unanswered by the Premier’s Office.
